. This invention relates to a cigarettel machine cutoff, and has for its main object the pro-duction of a device of this kind in which the angular velocity ofthe knife is accelerated during cutting action only in order to produce faster and better cuts in the cigarette rod. provision of means for producing harmonious reciprocations of the knife along the cigarette rod regardless of its varying angular velocity. IVith these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively plan and side elevations, partly broken away, of a cutoff constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 3 is an elevation taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a knife, a holder for the knife, an elongated spiral gear carrying and rotating said holder, a spiral pinion rotating said ear and means for reci rocatinfr said Oear holder and knife to produce acceleration of the angular velocity of the same during cutting action only. In the best constructions contemplated, said means produces harmonious reciprocations of the gear, holder and knife regardless of their varying angular velocity. The above mentioned parts may be varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the specific structure selected to illustrate the invention is but lone of numerous possible concrete embodiments of the same. The invention therefore is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described.
Referring to the drawings, the device is mounted on a base 4 of a cigarette machine in connection with which it is used, the elongated spiral gear 5 being supported by uprights Gand 7, and the shaft 8 of a spiral pinion 9 by the bearing column 10. The gear 5 is mounted on a shaft 11 which also carries disks 12 and 13, forming a knife hol-der and between which a knife blade 14 is clamped by means of a nut 15.
The shaftS, which is.rotated by suitable A further object is the` means from the main drive of theicigarette machine not sho-wn, carries a crank ltas.-y socia-ted l,with lthe pinion 91.- The crank pin 17 of the crankf16,by means of a connecting rod 1S, is joined to a lever 19"fulcrumed on a stud 20, supported by a column 21, carriedv by a bracket 22, secured to the base 4. At the point Where it crosses the-fshaftll, the lever 19- carries a. roller 23, workingin an annular groove 24 formed between a collar 25 on the gear 5 and the hub face ofthe disk 12.
A second roller 26 also works in the lower part of the groove 24. This roller is. at-y tached to a 'slide 27:, to which is fastened a holder 28 carrying a ledger plate 29` (3o-act-V ing with the knife 14, a cigarette tube 30, and a bell mouth 31, through which the cigarette rod, marked 32, passes in the usual manner while being cut by the knife 14. The slide 27, which is thus caused to have a hormonious reciprocating movement conforming with that of the gear 5, holders 12-13 and knife 14, is supported by a guide 3.3, attached to the base 4, in which it is held by gibs'34 placed upon either side of the guide 33.
The gear 5, knife holder 12-13 and knife 14 are rotated by the engagement of the pinion 9 with the gear 5. They are also given a harmonious reciprocating movement by means of the crank 16 and operating connections. 4The simultaneous rotary and reciprocating motion of the gear 5y causes an acceleration of angular velocity of the gear, the knife holder and the knife during that portion of the cycle in which the direction of the longitudinal movement of the gear is opposed to that ofthe rotation of the pinion 9, and a retardation of angular velocity during that portion of the cycle in which the two directions coincide. The direction of rotation and the relative arrangement of the parts are therefore so chosen that the angular velocity of the knife while cutting corresponds with the accelerated motion, and its angular velocity while running idle corresponds with the retarded motion, so that, from a uniform angular velocity of the pinion 9, a much greater cutting speed can be attained than by the driving means formerly employed, yet the reciprocations of the gear, the knife holder and the knife,
hination With a knife, of'a holderI .for saidl knife, an" elongated spiral gear carrying and rotating said holder, a spiral pinion rotating said gear, and means for reciprocat ing said gear, holder and knife to produce acceleration of the angular velocity of the s same during cutting action only.
` `2. In a cigarette machine cutoff, the conihina-tion with a knife, of a holder for said knife, anelongated spiral gear carrying and rotating said holder, a spiral `pinion rotating said gear, and means for reciprocating said gear, holder and knife toA produce acceleration ofv the angular velocity of the same during cutting action only, said means producing harmoniousreeiprocations of said gear, holder and `knife regardless of their varying angular Velocity. i f Y 3. In a cigarette machine cutoff, the combination with a knife,'of a holder for said knife, an elongated spiral gear carrying and rotating said holder,` a spiral pinion rotating said gear, and means for reciprocating said gear, holderand knifeto produce aeceleration ofthe angular velocity of the same duringeutting action only, said means being crank-actuated. Y
el. ,In a cigarette machine cutofhithe coin- 4bination with a knife, ofa holder for said knife, an elongated spiral gear carrying and rotating said helder,V aspiral pinion ,rotating "saidfgear, and means for reciprocating said gear, holder and'knife Vto produce acceleration of the angular `velocity of the same during cutting action only, said means `including a :crank associatedrwith said pin- .ing said gear, means for reciprocating said gear, holder and `knife to produce acceleration of the angular velocity of the same during cutting action only, and a ledger plate eoacting with said knife, said means producing harmonious reciprocations of said gear,
holder, knife and ledger plate regardless of the varying angular velocity ofsaid gear, holder and knife. i
In testimony whereof, Ihave signed my naine to this specification.
