IMPROVEMENT IN BILL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,750, dated May 25, 1875; application filed March 31, 1875.
Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and i useful Improvements in Bank-Bill Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top view, of same.
My invention is intended to firmly hold or secure the ordinary bank-notes ot' circulation; and consists of a base, A, four upright standards, b b b b, and a cover or weight, C. The standard bis removable, as shown by the socket d, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned.
Itis the custom in banks and banking-houses to stack the notes by alternate layers at right angles, such layers containing a certain number of dollars. lrVhen the amount ofthe stack is desired to be known, the cashier or teller passes the hand underneath each layer in succession, and by this method of counting` the total ,amount of the stack is quickly ascertained.
These stacks of bills or notes are sometimes thrown over, turned, blown by the Wind, or otherwise so confused that a recounting and restackin g is necessary.
By the use of my invention this is entirely avoided. Layer after layer can be placed alternately at right angles between the upright standards b b b b, as shown by the dotted lines in each figure, and the cover or weight C dropped between the upright standards, and by so doing the notes are firmly held.
When a counting ofl the stack in a manner before mentioned is necessary, the standard b may be removed, which allows a free movement of the hand for the desired result. Another advantage is that a card or marker mav be attached to the stack and the same placed in a vault or safe, and, when needed, is ready counted for disbursement.
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bank-bill holder, consisting of a base, A, upright standards b b b b, with a cover or weight, C, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES DAVIS, JR.
