primary object of the invention being to h provide a device of this character which willfacilitate the operation of providing a mortiseand one wherein the mortise when completed will be true and accurate.
' An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be adjusted to adapt the device for use in forming'mortises of various widths and lengths. i A still further object oi? the invention is to provide a machine of this'character which may be readily and easily clamped to the door or article under operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and'claimed, it being understood that changes in'the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made with-- 'inthe scope of what is claimed, wlthout departing from the spirit of the invention.

Adiustably supported by the U-shaperl bracing frame isa plate 19 formed with an elongatedopening 20 :that receives the screw 21 by means of which the plates 19 nay be adjusted with respect to one edge of the mortise to be cut, so that the material adjacent to the edge of the mortise will not split while the blades are passing through the material. 1
As clearly illustrated by Figure 5 of the drawings, the supporting frame is provided with offset portions 22 which provide guides for the central supporting beam 23 which moves through the guides and operates longitudinally oi the main frame.
The supporting beam 23 is formed with a central rib that has its ends disposed in spaced relation with the ends of the supporting beam proper to provide a space for the sprocket supporting arms24 that are formed with openings to accommodate the securing pin 25 that passes through the openmg 26 formed in the supporting beam 23.
These arms 24 are curved so that they will extend laterally and as shown, the arms support sprockets 28 over which the endless cutting member, to be hereinafter more fully described, moves. In order that the arms 2-1 maybe held in proper spaced relation with each other spacing members 29 are provided,
there being a spacing member carried by each, arm. Each spacing member is, formed with a cut away portion providing a shoulder 30 which shoulder is adapted to engage the opposite arm and" restrict movement of the arms with respect to eachother, asuitable securing pin being provided for holding the spacing members to their opposed arms. Securing screws 31 hold the members 29 to the supporting arms and it will be obvious thatshould it be desired to move the arms 2% greater distances apart, it is only necessary to remove the members 29 and replace them with longer spacing members wherein the shoulders fall to such positions that they will cause the outer ends of the arms 24 to be held greater distances apart.
Secured to the supporting beam adjacent to one end thereof are angle irons 32 which areprovided with openings in which the feed screws 33 move, the feed screws carrying pinions 3st at their outer ends, while the inner ends thereof move through the nuts 9 to cause the feed screws 32 and the supporting beam carried thereby to be fed longitudinally of the frame of the machine.
Positioned in the openings 35 formed adjacent to the outer end of the supporting beam are suitable bearings to accommodate the shaft 36 that carries pinions 3T meshing with the pinions 34 whereby rotary movement of the shaft 36 is imparted to the pinions 3s towhich are pivotally supported between the side members of the links of the chain. It might be further stated that it is contem plated to employ a quickeacting. securing member for securing theends of the chain,"

In order that the machine may be further steadied, a handle 42 is provided at the opposite side of the machine, and is designed to be gripped by the left-hand of the Open ator when the machine is in operation. From the foregoing it will be obvious that when the handle ll is rotated, the shaft 36 is also rotated to move the sprocket 38 which in turn moves the endless cutter that passes over thesprocket 28 to the, end that the endless cutting member is moved into engagement with the door being mortised, the cutting blades l0 moving through the material by the action of the feed" screws 33.
