IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,733, dated May 25, 1875; application led April 24, 1875.

My invention relates to a scaffolding; and it consists in the novel means hereinafter described and claimed for elevating and securing beams for platforms or other uses, at any desirable altitude. v

.The letters A of the drawings represent two frames, usually constructed in a triangular form, as shown, and having their upright posts secured together by means of bolts c. In the central portion of these frames I arrange two upright posts, cl d', upon cross-bars e e', and secure their summits in cap-pieces ff, as shown. Passing through these posts d, and secured therein by means of nuts, are the removable threaded bolts g. These bolts g and the bolts c serve as supports for the crossbeam B, hereinafter mentioned, and also for the braces, by which said beam is sustained and strengthened. B represents my cross-bar, which serves as a supporting-beam for scaffolding, or any like purposes. The ends of this beam rest, respectively, upon bolts g or c, above mentioned, two of the frames described being provided for that purpose. D represents my braces. They are constructed in the form shown in Fig. l, and are arranged in such manner that their lower ends, being of sleeve shape, shall clasp around a bolt, c or g, and be removable by removing said bolts, or otherwise. The upper ends of these braces are bifurcated, and so constructed that they may be clamped firmly to the cross-beam by means of a spur on one side and a pointed and threaded crank-pin on the other. On the inner sides of the uprights d d I form grooves, shown at h on Fig. l, and arrange therein slides marked y. These slides have, respectively, on their lower edges, spurs marked c, and they are moved upward or downward' at will, in the grooves or channels It.

To arrange the cross-beam at any desired altitude, and secure it in position, I take two of the frames described and lit't the ends of said beam upon the bolts I may elect. I then swing the braces D upward, and attach their upper ends to the beam irmly by means ot' the crank-pin, and the spurs in the opposite sides of the jaws. These braces being sleeved around the bolts are substantially pivoted thereto, as well as adjustable and removable. I next force the spurs on the slides y into the top of the beam by a blow of a hammer, and the beam becomes securely and rigidly attached to the frames.

For any purpose requiring only a single beam, two, only, of the frames, are required; but for the purpose of forming a bed for a scat'tbld-iioor, four frames are necessary.

Vhat l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The frames A, constructed with central posts d d', and removable bolts g, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination ot' the slides y, having spurs o, and working in grooves h, with the removable braces D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
