UNITED STATES ROBERT I. PATTERSON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF MUNOIE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-RUBBERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,688, dated May 25, 1875; application filed April 24, 1875.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT I. PATTERSON, of Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Hand Clothes-Washers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my washer, and Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.
This invention has relation to devices which are designed for facilitating the operation of washing clothes by hand; and the nature of my invention consists in a corrugated handwasher having a convex rubbing-surface, at the front and rear ends of which are applied strips of india-rubber, and on the back of which is applied an elastic strap to receive the hand and allow the device to be conveniently manipulated, as will be better understood from the following description:
In the annexed drawings, A designates a rectangular rubber, which is flat on top and convex on the bottom. The bottom of this rubber is ribbed or corrugated, and this corrugated surface may be covered with metal to increase its durability, or the wood surface may be left exposed.
At the front and rear ends of the rubber,
narrow pieces a a of india rubber are secured, which pieces extend from end to end of the rubber, and are confined in their places by means of strips 1) b, nailed to the rubber, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rubber pieces a (I, extend below the corrugated surface of the rubber A, and serve to protect the corrugations,'and also to prevent injury to the fabrics being washed. The pieces a a also assist in drawing the fabrics up and down on the wash-board.
To the back of the rubber A I secure a handle or hand-strap, B, which I prefer to make elastic that it may accommodate itself to the natural movements of the hand while using the device.
I am aware that a clothes-washing rubber, consisting of a board provided with a series of rubber flanges, as shown in Letters Patent of Hiram Burk, dated July 24, 1866, No. 56,523, are not new, and, therefore, I do not claim such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the corrugated rubber A and the rubber pieces a a at the ends thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT IRWIN PATTERSON.
