UNITED STATES LUTHER il. KIGER, 0F NASHVILLE, TENNESE.
IDENTIFICATION SEAL FOR AUTOMOBILE LICENSE TAGS.
Application filed January 31, 192'?. Serial No. 164,843.
This invention relates to new and useitul in'iprovements in identilication card carrying means 'for automobile license tags, and has ttor its primary object the provision ot a device of this character that general ly simulates a seal, and that is constructed for car rying anV identilication card that may be readily viewed by otl'icers or other interested parties in order that a satistactory check may be made on the vehicles so as to determine whether or not the same the possession of the driv-er or the employer thereof.
A further and most important object is to provide a device of this character wherein after the same has been applied to the tag it may not be removed therefrom without mutilating the device, which would be a ready indication that the car was driven by one other than the lawful owner or authorized party. y
A still further and important object .is to provide an identilicatiou seal ot this character that is extremely simple ot construction, inexpensive ot manufacture and one that may be readily applied to license tags without requiring any unusual mutilation oi the same.
Vtith the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature oit the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangei'nent ot parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyingl drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like re'terence chzu'acters indicate Correspendingf parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a ront elevation et a conventional automobile license tag blank equipped with an identiication seal constructedv in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in section through the tag and seal. j
Figure 8 is a top plan view ot the device as associated with the tag.
Figure 4l is a perspective ot a metallic tube that comprises an essential feature oi the invention, and
Figure 5 is a plan view ot an identification card blank ot the type preferably employed in association with the present in* vention.
Now having particular reference to the drawinv, my invention per se consists o t a relative y small metallic disc 5 upon the front face of which is a seal indicative of a par ticular tritate, as indicated in Figure l. .A t the lower edge oli' this disc 5 and upon tnv hach surface thereol is a circular' boss t3 itornied with a horizontal threaded socket T ilfor a purpose hereinallter more tally devl` scribed. Furthermore `l'ormed upon the rear :tace ot this disc 5 adjacent the upper edge thereof is a rearwardly projectingpin 8, the end which is tapered at 9 and that is termed in back of this tapered end portion with a ci,rciiunierential channel l0.
The invention further consists olf a sub stantially U-shaped bolt ll, the 'forward end of the lower arm ol' which is thriaded as at 12 so as to permit ot the securingl ot 'the holt -'\vith`in an opening)l in one ot the upper corners ot the license tain)` A through the medium et nuts and Washers as indicated in FigN ure 2.
The invent-ion further consists olf a metallic cylinder 13 closed at its opposite ends and being open at its top side as iiulieated in both ot said Figures 2 and Arranged within this cylinder 13 is a glass cylinder ll, the top side of which is visible through the opening in the top side of a metallic cyl inder 13. This latter mentioned cylinder is formed at the opposite ends of the opening,l with inwardly projecting ears 15-15 for engagement over the glass cylinder il so that the same will be rigidly associated therewith even prior to the disposition of its metallic carrying cylinder to the upper arm ot the llshaped bolt ll.
rlhe invention :further includes an open ended smaller metallic cylinder 1G that formed intermediate its ends with an elongated spring ting-er i7, the inner end ot which is bent inwardly to provide a lug i8. ln Figure 'there is disclosed an identilication slip designated 18 of celluloid` paper, or other similar material upon which is to be written or typed various indicia to indicate the name and addressv ot the owner of the car1 motor number, seal number, license number, ctc. This card .is wrapped around the small cylinder lt before the same is disposed within the ci. cylinder lli atter which said glass cylinder is disposed within the metallic cylinder i3 and secured therein by bending `the lugs 15S-l5 tl'iereo'ver.
ln actual practice the threaded end ot the Ushaped bolt ll is secured to the lic-ense tag A. The cylindrical unit is then slipped over the upper arm of the bolt ll as indicated in Figure 2. It is oi course necessary that the inner closed end of the metallic cylinder 13 he *provided with an opening in registratiol'i with the interior oil the sinall inet-allie cylinder lo. This unit is then disposed'upon the upper arrn of the bolt ll at the eXtren'ie innerl .end thereotl as indicated hy the dotted lines in Figure 2.
f The disc is then thread-ed upon the lower ar'rn oi the holt until the pin IO is in hori` zent-al alignment with the center oi' the cyl? [lrical unit.) alter which this unit is slid l wardly so that the tongue i8 of the finger 17 will catch in hack of the end 9 oi the dise pin 8 for heenreloening the unit in zjissoeiated relation 'fi'l'h the disc 5 so as to preventthe reisioval oi the dise and the consequent detael'unent oil: the `Cylindrical unit which would i'acilital'e the removal oi the card l?,- and the changing of the saine.
will thus he seen 'that Vl have ln'ovidml a highly novel, simple, and el'iii'zient identil'i cat-ion seal for automobile license tn s that is Well adapted for all the purpof-es heretoiiore designated, even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting o'l certain detail structural elen'ients it is nevertheless 'to he understood that seine changes inay he inade therein 'witl'iout :ideen ing the spirit and scope el? the appended claims.
Having` thus described the inventioi'i, what ineinher, one arn'i of which is adapted to he secured 'to a license tag, a disc secured on the 'l"( i'\\'ai'd end of said arm, an idenli'icalion ard holder having a sight window therein slidahly disposed upon the other arni oli the nre dier, meansrarried hy the inner tace oi the dintl tor engagement with in the forward end of 'the holder when the saine is inoved 'forwardly on the second inentioned arm, and complenientary strueture between said ineens and the holder lfor posi tively securing` the holder and the dise on the arn..
il. ln a lirense seal, ripper and lower arms interrozmected at one end, the lon-'er erin adapted 'l'or eo'inieetion with a license plate, a disc secured onV the forward end o'lf the lower arm, an identitication 'card holder slidahly disposed on the upper arinr` a pin carried by 'the inner face of the disc and adaijited to enter the card holder, and Vnoniplei'nel1lary structure between said card holder and the pin lor looking` the eard holder against .sliding nnjiveinent on the upper arin7 vwhen it is inoved to the end of the arin adjacent the dise.
ll. In a license tag seal, upper and lowerv a'rins interconnected at one end` the lower arni adapted lor connectionwith a license plate, n dise seeured on the forward'eml oi' the lower arln, iuridentitication card holder slidahly disposed on the upper arm,V
a pin carried by the inner tace'of the disc and adapt-ed to enter the ea'rd holder and con'ipleinentary structure between .said card.
her carried hy the card holder, said pin lio-- notch Jfor cooperation ino' iornied with a with 'the latch,
In testimony )vhereoi l alli); iny signature.
