Description

massima A. W. CALLIS ET AL July 26 1927.
POWDER -CHARGER Filed 001'.. 2. 1925 INVENTORS ATTO R N EY WITNESS:
Patented July 26, i927.
ALVA W. CALLIS, OF BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS, AND FRANK E. SMOOTS, OF ZINC- VILLE, OKLAHOMA.
POXVDER CHARGER.
Application filed October 2, 1926. Serial N0. 139,110.
llhis invention` relates to a powder loader, the general object ot' the invention being to provide means whereby powder can be sately deposited in a drill hole tor blasting purposes without danger ot a premature eX- plosion.
rlhis invention also consists in certain other Jfeatures ot construction and in the combination and arrangement ot the several parts, to be hereinafter 'tally described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and speciiically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln describing our invention in detail, ret'- erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding part-s throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a sectional view through the device, showing the same in closed position ready for loading.
Figure 2 is a view taken at right angles to Figure l, with parts in section and showing the parts after the discharge ot the powder. i
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view ythrough the device.
Figure l is a section on line l-4 ot Figure 1.
ln these views, l indicates the cylinder for receiving the powder, one end of the cylinder being attached to the pair ot rods 2 which have their outer ends connected together by the cross piece 8 which forms the handle. A handle member Li has a tamper 5 at its lower end which is arranged in 'the cylinder and the said member a is provided with a longitudinally extending bore 6 Vand with a. pair ot grooves 7, said grooves 7 receiving the rods 2. A. latch 8 is connected with the outer end of the member 4 and is adapted to engage the cross piece 3 to hold the parts with the cylinder upon the member el, as shown in Figures 1 or 3.
From the :foregoing7 it will be see-n that the powder is placed in the cylinder l when the parts have been moved in the position shown in Figure l, with the tuse passing through the bore t). Then the device is. placed in the hole which is to receive the powder and then the latch is moved to releasing position and the handle 3 pulled upwardly so as to pull the cylinder' over the member el and thus leave the powder in the hole.
rlhe powder can be tamped by the device without removing ythe devicetro'm the hole. fitter the tirst charge has been tamped, the device is withdrawn trom the hole and reloaded and then this charge is placed in the hole, though this charge does not require the tese, as the iirst charge or primer charge takes the ruse. The tamper 5 can be detachably connected with its supporting `memher by screws or the like. r
lt is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features ot' our invention will be readily apparent.
l/Ve desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall within the scope of the appended claim.
lNhat we claim is 1 i device ot the class described comprising a cylinder, a pair ot rods fastened to one end ot the cylinder, a cross piece connecting the outer ends of the rods together and Yforming a handle, ay tamper member ot tubular shape extending into the cylinder and having longitudinal grooves therein 'lor receiving the rods and a latch on the outerV end of the said member t'or engaging the cross piece.
ln testimony vwhereof we affix our signatures.
ALVA lV. CALLlS. FRANK E. SMOGTS.
