This invention relates to a combined dish and cover, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to for protecting the food carried b the dish to prevent the dissipation of the eat and moisture of the 'food'thereb retaining same in a satisfactory condition or the consumer, and further to so construct the dish and cover to provide for the stacking of a series of combinations in superposed relation to permit of a waiter carrying the stack to expedite the serving of various kinds of food.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a combined dish and cover, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily assembled, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention'consists of the novel con struction, combination and arran ement of parts as hereinafter more. speci ,cally described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but itis tobe understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings whereln like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views p Figure 1 is an elevation of a combination in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the dish.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the cover.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 Figure 2 and further illustrating in section a cover and a dish supported thereby.
Referring to the drawings in detail, each dish is of like construction and the description of one will ply to the other. The dishes are indicated at 1 and 2. Each dish is constructed of any suitable material, referably metal of any suitable gauge and can be set u of any suitable contour, referably oval. ach dish comprises a sha low body ortion 3 formed at its top with a right anguarly dis osed outwardly extending continuous iiiange 4 which merges into an upstanding outwardly inclined continuous ortion 5 forming a shoulder 6 and said inclined portion 5 terminates in an outwardly extendmg right angularly disposed continuous rim 7 of materially greater widththa'n the width of the flange 4. LIhe upper face of the flange 4'prov1des a seat 8 for the bottom edge of the cover and the latter is referred ,to generally pg the reference character: 9.
e cover 9 is constructed of material similar to that from which the dish is formed and comprises a body portion 10 correspondmg m contour to the shape of the dish and of a length and width to have its bottom edge seat throu hout on the upper face of the flange 4. e body portion 10 is open at its bottom and formed with a closed top 11 which is positioned below the top ed e of the body portion 10. The top edge 0% the body portion 10 is indicated at 12 and that portion of the inner face of the body portion 10 which extends from the upper face of the top 11 to the edge 12 is outwardly bevelled as at 13 so as to conform to the bevelled outer face 14 of the body portion 3 of the dish whereby when the late 2 is mounted upon the cover 9 the b Krtion 3 will snugly engage throughout t e velled face 13 of the b0 y portion 10. The positioning of the top 11 below the top edge 12 of the body port on 10 forms in connection with the body ortion 10 a cavity or pocket to receive the ody portion 3 of the plate 2.v Formed integral with the periphery of the body portion 10, at each end thereof is a handle member 15. The top edge of the body portion 10, when the dish 2 is mounted upon the top of the coverv engages the lower face of the flange 4 of the dis 2.
It is thought the many advantages of a' combination dish and cover, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the, preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is 1. A combination dish and cover comprising a dish element formed of a continuous, shallow body portion closed at its bottom and provided at its top with an outwardly directed right an ularly disposed continuous flat fiange termfiiating in a con-- tinuous up-standing portion mergin into an outwardly directed, right angular y disposed continuous flat rim, said flange and rim, in cross section, extending in arallel planes, and a cover element formed 0' a continuoushollow open bottom body rtion and a top for the latter and with 'sai bodyportion having its lower edge confo 1n contour to the shape of, seating on an coextensive with said flange, said top arranged within and positioned below theuppere of the cover element body portion to provi in connection with that part of the latter prqecting above said top therefor 'a pocket conforming in contour to the body portion of a dish element seated in said pocket for receiving and holding such body portion. 2. A. combination dish and cover comprising a dish element formed of a flared, continuous, shallow body portion provided at its upper end with an outwardly directed right angularly disposed flat flange terminating in a continuous, upstanding, outwardly inchned portion merging into a continuous, outwardly directed right angularly disposed flat rim, said flange and rim, in cross section extendin in parallel planes, and a cover element ormed of a hollow, open bottom body portion and a top for the latter, the body portion of said cover element having its lower edge conforming in contour to the she e of, seating on and co-extensive with sai flan said top arranged within and positioned i110, the upper edge of the cover element body portion to provide in connection with that part of the latter projecting above said top a pocket conforming in contour to the body portion of a-dish elementadapted to be seated in said pocket whereby the latter will receive and hold such body portion. v
3. A combination dish and cover comprising a dish element formed of a continuous, shallow body portion closed at its bottom and provided at its top with an outwardly directed, right angularly disposed continuous flat flange terminating in a continuous-upstandin portion merging into an outwardly directe right angularly disposed continuous flat rim, said flange'and mm, in cross section, extendin in parallel planes, a cover element forms of acontmuous hollow open I sitioned bottom body portion and a top for ter and with said body portion having its lower edge conforming 1n contour to the she I of, seating on andco-extensive with sai flan said top arranged within and polow the upper edge of the cover element body portion to provide in connection with that art of the latter projecting above said top t erefor a pocket conforming in contour to the body rtion of a dish element seated in said st for recei holding such body portion, and sp handle members pro ecting from the outer face of the cover element body portion.
4. A combination dish and cover comprising a dish element formed of a continu shallow body portion closed at its bottom an provided at its to rected, right rly disposed continuous flat flange terminating in a continuous u standin portion merging 'gito an outwa y directe ,right angularl disposed continuous flat rim, said flan an rim, in cross section, extending in para el planes, a cover element formed of a continuous shallow open bottom bodly portion and a to for the latter and wit said body portion its lower edge conforming in contour to the shape of, seating on and co-extensive with said flange, said top arranged within and positioned below the upper edge of the cover element body portion to provide in connection with that part of the latter projecting above said top therefor a pocket conforming in contour to the body portion of a dish element seated in said pocket for receiving and holding such body portion, said pocket being of a depth substantiall the same as the height of the outer side ace of the body portion of the dish element, the top edge of the body portion of the cover element providing means and with an outwardly difor supporting the flange of the dish element seated in the pocket.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
