IMPROVEMENT lN SHlNGLlNG-BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,587, dated 25, 1875; application filed March 11,1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED P. FLnToHER, of Middletown, county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Staging-Bracket, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming part of the same.
My invention relates to a bracket to support stagings employed in shingling the roofs of buildings, and for other similar purposes and consists in a slotted brace or tie pivoted to the horizontal beam or support upon which the staging is laid, and a slotted upright, hinged at its upper end to the rearend of the said beam, to which upright the said brace or tie is secured and adjusted by a screw-bolt and thumb-nut working in the slotted openings in the brace and upright, and said upright having feet provided with claws at its lower end, the forward end of the brace and beam, beyond their pivotal point, being formed, respectively, into an upper and lower jaw,
provided with teeth, the lower jaw, carried by the beam, being curved, and the upper jaw, carried by the brace, being flattened, so that its upper side forms a portion of the level support for the staging, the said beam being provided with'a sliding collar, secured in place upon it by a thumb-screw, whereby the bracket may be readily adjusted to any slant of roof,
and, when thus adjusted, held securely in place upon the roof, and form a level support for the staging, and whereby the staging will be prevented from sliding or iallin g from the bracket.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bracket embodying my invention, showingit adjusted and secured as a support for staging upon a slanting shingle-roof. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the jaws formed by the forward ends of the beam and brace.

E is a screw-bolt, provided with a thumb-nut, F, and a washer, 20, arranged to work in the slotted openings to and c of the brace A and upright C, and opera-ting to secure the brace firmly to the upright at any desired angle. The forward end of the beam B is formed into the lower curved jaw f provided with teeth, as shown, and the forward end of the braceAis bent into the straight or flattened jaw g, which is also provided with teeth, as shown, so that the upper side of the jaw g is in a line with the upper side of the beam B, and forms a portion of the level support for the staging. m is a collar arranged to slide upon the beam B, and formed with the projection 19 upon its upper side, and held at any desired place upon the beam by the thumbscrew n, and operates to prevent the staging from sliding or falling off of the bracket.
I make the various parts of my bracket, as described, preferably of cast, wrought, or malleable iron.
Now, it is evident that by the operation of the screw-bolt E and thumb-nut F, and the slotted openings aandc in the brace A, and the upright C, the bracket may be adjusted to the angle of slant of the roof, and held in position, so that the beam B and the upper side of the jaw 9 will form a level support for the staging, and that the bracket, thus arranged and adjusted, will be attached securely to, and held in position upon, the roof, as a support for stagings, by the operation of the jaws f and g, griped upon the lower portion of a shingle nailed in place upon the roof, as shown in the drawings, or upon any other convenient and suitable object, and, by the claws d d of the feet D D of the upright C, fixed in the surface of the roof, as shown.
I do not claim, broadly, a bracket for staging consisting of a supporting-beam and upright, and a brace, and the devices shown for securing the bracket upon the roof, intending to limit myself to the combination, with the parts herein shown and described, of the brace A, having the slotted 'opening a, and the upright C, having the slotted opening 0, together with the screw-bolt E, the thumb-nut F, and the washer 10.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a staging bracket, of the slotted brace A, pivoted to the beam B at 1),"0116 toothed jaws f and g, the jaw f carried by the beam B being curved, and the jaw 9 carried by the brace A being flattened, so that its upper side will form a portion of the level support for the staging when adjusted in po sition upon the roof, the slotted upright 0 provided. at its lower end with the claws d d upon the feet D D and hinged at e to the beam B, the screw-bolt E, the thumb-nut F, and the washer w, and the collar m, formed with the projections 19, and provided with the thumb screw 42, as described. v
