UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs T. WALKER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROLLS FOR ROLLING HORSESHOE-BLANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,554, dated May 18, 1875; application filed April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES T. WALKER, of Albany, in the county of Albany and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolls for Rolling Horseshoe Blanks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of 'a set of rolls for rolling horseshoe-blanks, which shall be formed with toe-calks, and with countersinks for the nail-heads, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rolls; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the lower roll through the line a; m, Fig. 1.
A A represent two parallel standards, in which the spindles B and C have their bearings, said spindles to be suitably geared, so as to revolve together. On the upper spindle B is an ordinary smooth roll, D, provided with a circumferential flange, a, of suitable width and thickness. The lower spindle O is provided with a flange-collar, E, which may be either cast on the spindle or loose thereon, in which latter case the spindle will have to have a feather or key, b, to prevent the collar from turning except with the spindle. At the side of the collar is placed a collar, G, which is provided on its face with projecting punches d d, for indenting the countersinks in the bar or blank to be rolled. This collar is also cut away at two opposite points of its surface at h h, so as to leave spaces for forming the toecalks. On the other side of this collar G is placed a collar, H, and all these collars are -may either be a collar-nut or keyed on.
fastened in place by means of a collar, I, wl ilich he collar Hmay either be loose or fastened to the false collar I, all forming, when in position, a groove in the roll, with projections in the bottom to make the countersinks in the bar, and cavities for forming the toe-calks.
The roll is of such diameter as shall make two shoes or shoe-blanks at each revolution.
The rolls thus constructed are to be placed at one end of a train of rolls. The metal to be rolled is workeddown to a shape to fill the groove formed by the collars E and H, in the manner known to iron-Workers, and then, being passed through the groove, will come out indented for nail-holes, and with projections suitable for toe-calks.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine forrollin g horseshoe-blanks, the collar G, provided with the projecting punches d and cut-out portions h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the side collars E and H and the intermediate collar Gr, provided with the projecting punches d and cutout portions h, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the roll D, provided with the circumferential flange a, and. the roll formed of the collars E H and intermediate collar G, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of March, 1875.
JAMES T. WALKER. Witnesses:
