Description

W. 8. BROWN DIVING BOARD July 12 1927.
Filed June '7. 1926 INVENTOR W 5 BROWN ATTORNEYS Patented July 12, 1927.
UNITED staresv PATENT OFFICE.

DIVIH' G 'DOLBID.
510, issued April 6, 1926. The improvement consists in providinga device in which the board proper is removable and reversible, the fulcrum moved more'readily, and which .is more durable andefficient for the purpose intended. c
' A further object of my invention is to provide a diving board of the icharacter described in which that portion ofthe board behind the fulcrum flexes so as to lend a high degree of resilience thereto. without undue strain on that portion above the fulcrum. lt should .noted at the present time that the ordinary- .type of spring board which flexes in front of the fulcrum and between the fulcrum and the. diver frequently breaks at 'a point immediately over the fulcrum, My improved diving board entirely eliminates this disadvantage. 5
A further object of my invention is to provide a diving board of the character described which possesses a higher degree of resiliency, and which imparts greater force through. a shorter distance to the diver than the ordinary type of diving board which overhangs the fulcrum for the major portion of the board.
A further object of my invention is to provide a diving board of the character described in which the board proper may be reversed.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the board proper,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device, as applied to a pier,
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device,
Figure 4 is a plan view of a modified form of the framework, and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Figure 4. I
In carrying out my invention, I make use f the I framework of a supporting surfacel, such as a pier, a

tank wall, or the like, My divingboard consists of a member A which is formed of five wooden two-b-y-fours 2 placed. parallel with one another and at a. short distance apart and substantially fourteen and onehalf feet in length.,. These two-by-fours aresecured to one another by cleats-3 andblocks 4 disposed transverse tov the members 2. .A
frame 5 is provided having an enlarged end 6 and a plurality of relatively small openings Z in the sides thereof... A crossbar -8 is disposed horizontally u on the sides of the frame. .5, and is provid with threaded bolts at each endthereof which extend through openings in the end 6, and is adjustably held in place by means of nuts 9. r
A fulcrum 1.0 is rigidly secured to a fastening member 11. The fastening member 11 is provided with an opening in each end thereof into which pins 12 are disposed. The pins 12 extend beneath the fastening member 11 and are adapted 'tofbe received "in the openings? in the frame 5.; The frame 5 may be secured to the support 1 by suitable means,such as bolts 18;
From the foregoing description of theva rious parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The frame 5 is secured to the support 1, as shown in Figure 2. The member A is disposed above the frame 5, one end thereof resting upon the crossbar 8, see Figure 2. A metal strip 14 is disposedupon the end of the member A adjacent the crossbar. and is provided with outwardly extending integral lugs 15 which pass beneath the sides of the frame 5. In this manner, the end of the member A is held in place. The member A rests upon the fulcrum 10 at' a point adjacent the forward end thereof. It will be observed that the fulcrum may be moved re'arwardly and held in place by disposingthe pins 12 in the desired openings 7. This is illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 2.
In Figures 4 and 5, I have shown a modified form of frame which is substantially the same in construction as the frame 5, with the exception that the modified form is constructed mainly of metal pipes or tubes,
any
' and the frame 5 is constructed mainly of vwood, such as two-by-fours.
The modified form consists of sides 20 which are provided with relatively small openings 21 therein. A fulcrum 22 is disposed above the sides 20' and adapted to ride thereon. A fastening member 23, which'is operatively connected to the fulcrum 22, is provided with pins 24. The pins 24 are receivable in the openings 21, and in this manner, the fulcrum 22 may be secured in any desired position. A crossbar 25 is adjustably secured to the frame, see Figure 4. A metallic strip, 26, having outwardly extending integral flanges 27, is provided for holding one end of the member A adjacent the crossbar 25.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a crossbar adjustably carried by said frame, an elongated resilient member having one end disposed upon said crossbar, means disposed above said elongated resilient member and extending beneath said frame for holdingthe adjacent end of said member in close proximity to said crossbar, and a fulcrum adjustably disposed beneath said member and adjacent the forward end thereof.
2. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a crossbar adjustably carried by saidframe, an elongated resilient member having either end adapted to be disposed upon said crossbar, one of said ends being disposed upon said crossbar, means disposed above said elongated resilimember and extending beneath said frame for holding the adjacent end of said member in close proximity to said crossbar, and a fulcrum adjustably disposed beneath said member and adjacent the forward end there of.
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a resilient member having-a block disposed at each end thereof, means carried by said frame for receiving one end of said resilient member, and holding Vmeans for holding said end and the block adjacent said end in place, said holding meansbeing adapted to be moved Whereby the held end of said resilient member may be freed, the resilient member'reversed and the other end held in place by said holding means.
4. In a device of the type described, a frame, a resilient member, a block rigidly secured to one endof said resilient member, a crossbar, bolts extending through said cross bar and said frame, and means for receiving one end of said resilient member, said cross bar being adapted to engage with said block for holding said block and the end of said resilient member in place.
5. A device'of the type described comprising a frame adapted to be secured to a support, said frame being positioned parallel with said support, a resilient member, means carried by one end of said frame for holding one end of said resilient member, a fulcrum disposed upon said frame beneath said resilient member, means for moving said fulcrum with respect to said frame and said resilient member, and means positioned between said frame and said resilient member for locking said fulcrum in adjusted position. 7
