As shown in this drawing, the improved press comprises a base plate a provided with ak surface b serving as a stationary or lower ram plate on which a form 0, printing bed plate or the like can be supported, the said form being slida-ble on the lower ram plate so that it can be set in a position below a movable or upper ram plate Z or drawn out from below the latter, as required. liththis arrangement, when .the/shaft gffis turned to cause the cams topress down the upper. ram plate, the effects of torsional strain of the shaft are avoided and the upper ram plate, by means of the central arrangement of the operating handle, can be actuated so as to apply an equal pressure from end to end on an article or material inserted between the upper and lower ram plates.
The cam grooves Z above mentioned are employed for lifting the upper ram plate and act through the rollers m on the strap plates 0 bolted to theends of the lugs or arms f. These'cam grooves can be made of such a length that they limit the angle through which the handle can be turned, and thus determine the extreme positions to which the upper ram plate can be moved. 'lhe contour of the grooves Z and the width thereof compared to the diameter of the rollers n are however preferably such that the weight of the ram is allowed to assist in the printing, embossing or pressing operation. y
Nhen it is desired to prevent the upper ram plate from moving downwardly to the lowermost position allowed by the positions of the ends of the cam grooves Z, the strap plates 0 are formed with inclined lower edges, and stop plates p with inclined upper edges are slidably mounted below the said strap plates. By adjusting these stop plates in their slides, an accurate adjustment of the lowermost position of the upper ram plate can be ensured, as may be necessary or desirable to limit the ultimate compressive#Y effort which can be exerted by the upper ram plate on material placed beneath it. As shown in Figure l the stop plates ya are held against the standardsor uprights by bolts g passing through slots r in the plate and are adjustable in the direction of their length by adjustment or feed screws s having` flanges t thereon which at one side projects into a groove in the stop plate, the feed screw s being carried in a tapped hole in the standard. The lower edge of the stop plate y) is supported on a guide surface provided on the standard e so that any downward thrust on the stop plate does not exert any shearing effort on the bolts g. rIhe feed screws or the stop plates can be marked with scales or graduation marks to indicate their positions of adjustment.
I claim:
l. An embossing press comprising a lower ram plate, an upper ram plate, standards on the lower ram plate serving as guideways for the upper ram plate, a shaft mounted to rock in bearings in the standards, an operating handle arranged at a central part of the shaft, cams on the shaft between the said handle and the shaft bearings whereby the said upper ram plate can be depressed, grooved plates carried by the shaft, and
means carried by the upper ram plate and working in the grooves of said plates to limit the movement of the upper rain plate.
2. An embossing press comprising a lower ram plate, an upper rain plate, standards on the lower ram plate, arms on the said upper ram. plate movable along guide surfaces provided onr the standards, a shaftmounted to rock in bearings in the standards, an operating handle arranged at a central part of the shaft, and cams on the shaft between the said handle and the shaft bearings whereby the said upper ram plate can be depressed.
3. An embossing press comprising a lower ram plate, standards of rectangular cross section on the said lower ram plate, an uppeil rain plate slidable along guideways provided on the outer faces of the said standards, arms on the said upper ram plate respectively extending on opposite sides of the standards, strap plates at the outer ends of said arms arranged to slide on the said standards, a
shaft mounted to rock in bearings in the e standards, an operating handle arranged at a central part of the shaft, and cams on the shaft between the said handle and the shaft bearings.

An embossing press comprising a lower rain plate, an upper ram plate, standards on the lower ram plate serving as guides for the upper ram plate, ashaft mounted to rock in bearings in the standards, an operating handle arranged at a central part of the shaft, cams on the shaftwhereby the said upper ram plate can -be depressed, rollers carried on the upper ram plate, and plates carried by the shaft and having cam grooves therein forming tracks for the rollers whereby the said upper ram plate can be raised.
5. An embossing press comprising a lower ram plate, an upper ram plate, standards on the lower ram plate serving as guides for the upper ram plate, a shaft mounted to rock in bearings in the standards, cams on the shaft whereby the upper ram plate can be depressed, and adjustable stop plates for limiting the downward movement of the said upper ram plate.
