This invention relates to means for opening'and closing window shutters, and the main object is to enable a person in a room to open and close and hold open or closed'an outside shutter without opening rthe regular window or such storm window 0r screen as may be disposed inside et the shutter.k
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is an outside elevation of a portion oi' a house wall and window equipped with my invention. Y I
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. y I
Fig. 3 is a right hand edge view oi F ig. 1. Fig. 4 is a View as on line 4 4 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is Fig. 2 modified as may be required for walls having a brick veneer,` or being otherwise of special thickness.
Fig. 6 is a detail side view of one of the links in the shutter opener.
Fig. 7 is the upper edge of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is the lower edge of Fig. 6. Y Fig. 9 is Va section on line 9-9 in Fig. 7. Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 12 designates a house wall in which is secured a window frame 13 having a sill 14 and a lintel 15. Mounted vin said frame is a regular house window 16, a screenY the screen, I provide al bendable actuating rod composed of aV handle piece 22 and a series of links 23 pivoted together at 24 to form 4an .arch the outer end of which is pivoted at 25 to a bracket 26 fixed on the lower hinge member .19EL of the shutter. Each link has a shoulder 27 meeting a sinnlar shoulder on the nextV link so as to cause the links to form a segment with a certain radius from the pintle of the hinge 19 as its center. The adjacent wall portion has an aperture 28'nl for the link rod and its handle piece 22 to slide in while theshutter is being swung open or closed by manipulation of the handle piece 22. To make said sliding movement more easy and accurate the link rod is guided between rollers 29 vin a channel-shaped bracket 30 secured by screws 31 in the aperture or guide 28a in the wall.
As a locking means for the actuating rod 23--28 I securel upon the inside apron 33 (see Fig. 4) a bracket 34 having a hole 35 yedges 38 (see Fig. 2)
for the rod, and adjacentthe rod an eccentric or cam 36 having near its longest radius a finger catch 37 by which to turnit and to help giving ita tendency'to rest against the adjacent edge of the actuating rod so as to engage and hold it with the shutter either open or closed. To further insure such engagement the cam is formed with' several peripheral adapted to engage in notches 39 in the handle piece 22 when the shutter is closed, or in notches 40 in one of the links 23 when the shutter is to be held open, and when thus held open the handle piece 22 is folded at its joint 41 (see Figs. 2' and4 and folded close tothe apron 33, as shown in Fig. 4.
yIn Fig. 2, 42 indicates a certain form of hinges for the screen sash 17a but as such hinging is described and claimed in another application ofv mine filed simultaneously herewith the same need not be herein further described.
If the device herein described is to be used in a frame house having its walls thickened by brick veneer or if the walls be made altogether oibrick or stone, iny device must Vbe modied t0 accommodate the eXtra thickn ess of the wall. Such modiiication is believed to be suiiiciently indicated in Fig. 5 ,where the hinges 19 are offset at 191. to allow Ythe shutter to be folded back as 18 against the outer side of the eXtra thick wall 12a.
VIn this case the actuating rod will have more links and be altogether longer than when used in a common frame house wall.
The cell construction of the thick wall in Fig. 5 being already covered by a pending application of mine it neednot be herein described. Fig. 5 shows however that' my present shutter opener and closer is applicable also in walls of such-construction.
That I claim is 1. The combination with a house wall and a'window frame therein and window sashes in the frame and a shutterhinged to fold toward the outside of the wall when opened,
of a shutter opening and closing device coinprising an actuating rod slidable through an aperture in the 'wall below the window sill and having its outer portion formed of knee-jointed links adapted to form a hori- Zontally curved segment, the outer end of said segment havin@ pivotal connection with the shutter and the other end having a handle piece operable from within the house.
n channeled bracket secured in the aperture guiding the rod at the peint Where it changes 1n tlie will and having anti-friction rollers :freni straight to segmental position.
Q. The structure specified in elaini l, in Whieli the links of tlie rod are segmental and the guiding rollers are so arranged at opposite Sides of the red that eaeli link is bound te Slide in the line of its own segment; ai; :i predetermined radins 'lroin the center 10 of the segment.
In testimony wliereo'l I affix niy Signature.
