My invention relates to guards for the protectionof windows and contemplates the utilization of demountable bars associated with means for mounting and locking the bars in operating position and with means for storing the bars when not in service.
One object of my invention is to design the mounting means for the bars so that the same.are hardly noticeable'and require but a slight changein the meeting check rails of the top and bottom sashes to receive them when applied to existing windows, and which are capable of being built into new window frames so as to take the place of the parting strip between the runways for the upper and lower sash.
Another object of my invention is to pro- Vide these bar mounting members with racks to receive and hold the demounted bars at the bottom of the window.
A further object is to design the bars so that they can be readily interlocked with their mounting members by the operation of one common lock bar and when thus locked in position,access cannot be had to unlock same without breaking the window.
My invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiment only, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation with a. window frame equipped with my improved guide bars shown in operating position and in demounted position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view broken away of the bars showing their mounting means partly in elevation and partly in section.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views illustrating the latch for holding the lock bar in operation or idle'position.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, I show conventionally a window frame having an upper sash 1, a lower sash 2, with the runways for said sashes separated by a parting strip 3 throughout their upper portions and by the bar mounting members 7 and 8 which continue to the stool 6 of the window frame. rail 5 of the lower sash are cut away at each end, where necessary, to accommodate the members 7 and 8, such cutting being necessary where the guard is applied to old windows, but it may be avoided in new windows by having the mounting members 7 and 8 to correspond in cross sectlon with the part ing strip.
The bar mounting member 8 is preferably formed of tubular metal having the width of the parting strip 3 and having substantial depth so that the apertures 9, arranged at suitably spaced intervals in its inner edge, are adapted to receive the reduced ends 10 of the "uard bars 11 with sutficient overlap of said ends in the mounting member to prevent them being pulled out. This tubular member 8 is secured in any desirable manner to the window frame as by wood screws 1 12 inserted through the apertures 9 and through the inner wall of the member and screwed into the window frame.
. The mounting member '7 for the other end of'the bars is also formed'of tubular metal similar in cross section to the member 8 and similarly mounted. At corresponding int-ervals in this member 7 opposite the apertures 9 I provide notches 13 which extend from the outside wall across the inner end wall and partway across the inside wall, thus permitting the ends 14 of the rods tobe moved into position with the holes 15 in such ends disposed in alignment within the tubular member 7. In the space between the ends 14: of the bars and the inner wall of the member 7 which is screwed to the frame, I introduce a lock bar 16 having for each bar 11 an offset downturned angled lock pin 17 adapted to project through the hole 15 in its respective bar. The upper end of this look rod is out-turned at 18 and adapted to engage in one or the other of two holes 19 or 20 in a plate 21 attached to the parting strip 3, these holes permitting the lock bar to be set in operative or inoperative position.
At the bottom of the members 7 and 8 I provide means to rack the dismounted guard bars 11, such means preferably taking the form of an inside notch 22 merging into a vertical slot 23 in the inner edge of the member 8 at its base, and a vertical slot 24 at the base of the inner wall of the member 7. This arrangement thus permits the hars to be readily put up at night and taken down and racked during the day when they might be ohjectionahle or unsightly.
