Application March 12, 1949, Serial No. 81,116
This invention relates to Venetian blinds, and
the main object is the provision, in combination with the slats of which the blinds are made up.
tended solely for the purpose of illustrating the invention, and it is therefore tobe understood that it is not intended or desired to limit the invention necessarily to any or all of the exact details shown except insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window equipped with a Venetian blind and showing an embodiment of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a Venetian blind and one of the two upright guide members which are mounted on both sides of the window frame.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view substantially similar to Fig. 3 but also showing the releasable looking member in locking position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the releasable locking member per se.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a window frame having the opposed walls I! and I2 and the sill I3, the sashes I4 and I being mounted therein in the usual manner. A Venetian blind I6 is also shown mounted on the window, for operation in the usual manner, and its plurality of horizontal slats is shown at H.
In carrying out the objects of this invention, a pair of upright hollow moldings I8 are mounted against the side walls I I and I2 of the window frame. Each molding I8 is provided with 00- planar wings I9 having a series of vertical spaced circular openings therethrough, each of the said openings 2|] having a reduced-slot-like extension 2i. The moldings I8 may thus be attached to the walls II and I2 by first screwing screws 22 in proper vertically spaced positions in these walls and leaving the screw heads projecting slightly from the walls, then setting the 1 Claim. (Cl. 160172) molding against the wall with the screw heads passing through the openings 28 in the wings I9, and finally sliding the moldings down so that the screw stems enter the slotextensions 2I. Thus the moldings I8 may readily be mounted. in place or removed Of course any other suitable'or desired means of attaching the moldings IB may be utilizedwithout altering the scope of this invention. The moldings I8 are so positioned that their lower ends stand a short distance above the sill l3, thus'leaving a clear space 23 between the lower end of the molding and the sill or whatever other member of the entire window frame may lie below the molding.
Each molding l8 has a vertical median slot 24 extending upward through the lower end of the middle wall or panel 25 thereof and terminating a short distance from the top of the said panel, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby leaving a portion 26 of the panel at the top serving to close the upper end of the slot 24.
Each of the slats I! is provided with outwardly extending pins 2! which may be provided on the ends of the slats in any desired manner. One way of securing the pins is illustrated in Fig. 3, by having the pins integral with end caps 28 frictionally mounted on the ends of the slats. These pins project through the slots '24 in the moldings I8.
That wall 29 of each molding I8, which faces forward into the room, is provided with a series of equally spaced openings 3b, which may be square .in conformation, therethrough, these openings being so positioned that each is on a horizontal level between the slats I! when the blind is fully extended across the window open- A locking member comprises a bar 3| equal substantially in length to the height of the moldings I8, and two such locking members are utilized, one for each side of the window. The bar 3| is provided with a plurality of spaced [projections or prongs 32 lying in a common plane and so arranged that the distance between adjacent prongs is equal to the distance between adjacent openings 30 in the molding wall 29. Thus, when the blind is fully extended, insertion of the prongs into their respective openings 30 and pushing the bar 3| home against the wall 29, causes the prongs to be positioned between the slat pins 21, as shown in Fig. 6. In this position of the bar 3| and hence the prongs 32, it is ap parent that the blind cannot be raised or folded up, for the prongs 32 serve as obstacles which the pins 21 cannot pass. Hence the blind cannot illustrated. This consists in mountingthehandle.
34 pivotally in brackets 35"on the bar; and further having a right-angle-shaped tongue 36 hinged at one end at 31 to the adjacent Wing I9 and having a slot or opening 38 throughits other end adapted to receive a padlock 39. Thus the. bar: 3|, Fig. 4, cannot be removed to free the slat" pins 21 without first unlocking the.-lock.3.9. and. swinging the handle 34 out of the way oithe tongue 36.
Obviously, modifications in form or structure may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. The spaces 23 below the: moldings I-8:- permit.- of withdrawing. on the. pins; 2-1; when? itzis desiredto remove theblind.
We olaimz.
In combination with; a window equippedlwith. avenetiamblind; said window including a.windowi framehaving. opposed. side Wall's,.said blindiineluding. a plurality ofhorizontal slats-each of said: slats havin pins; extending, from the, ends thereof; I a hollow. vertical. molding mounted against each of said side. walls, said. pins. all. lying in)- a common. vertical plane, said molding includev ing a wallatiright. angles to said, pins, saidiwall having a vertical; slot. therethrough, said Pins adjacent said each of said sidewalls projecting through said. slot into said. molding, .sai'd; molding having a front wall at right. angles to. said slotted Wfi11;,$2tldfront. wall. having; a. plurality of verticallyw spaced openings therethrough,.the. distance between adjacent of said openings being substantially equal to the distance between adjacent of said slats when the blind is fully extended, each of said openings being positioned between the horizontal positions occupied by said slats when the blind is fully extended, a bar having a plurality of spaced prongs extending from one side thereof-, the distance between adjacent of said prongs being substantially equal to the distance between said openings as aforementioned, said bar bein adapted to be positioned against said front. Wallwithsaid prongs passing through said openings andpositioned between said pins, means for locking said bar releasably in said position against said. front; wall, said means comprising a- U-shaped. handle pivotally mounted on said bar-,ahasp-tongue pivotally mounted at one end on said' molding; the other end of said tongue having an opening therethrough, said tongue being adapted to be swung into position across said bansaid handle being adapted to-be swung into position: over saidtongue. so that said. tongue passes under saidhandle,- said tongue opening being adapted tohave the hasp of a padlock passed therethrough. 7
