THE GRAPHIC C(LPHOTO-LITHJS &4I PARK PLACE, NY
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. GUY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO DEBORA C. JAMES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JACK-SPOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,483, dated May 18, 1875; application filed March 28, 1873.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. GUY, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spools or Bobbins, used principally in the manufacture of textile fabrics and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved spool or bobbin. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section of the same, and Fig. 3 represents an end view of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in. detail.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the cylindrical wooden piece or barrel of the bobbin, on each end of which is a screw-thread, a a, by means of which head-pieces B B are secured to it and these'pieces are not made, as heretofore, of Wood, but of pulverized leather, pressed into suitably shaped heads by means of dies.
Each spool or bobbin head may consist of one piece, or two or more pieces glued together, as shown at b b, Fig. 1, the combined thickness of which shall equal the necessary thickness of the spool or bobbin head.
The cost of manufacturing the heads from pulverized leather is about the same as of wood; but the leather heads wear at least four times as long as heads made of wood, while the weight of the bobbin is decreased. The leather heads will not break or shiver up like the wooden ones, and tear the yarn, or
whatever is wound upon the bobbins; consequently my improved bobbin is far superior and more desirable for use than those with wooden heads.
When necessary, small metal tubular bearing-pieces may be screwed into the ends of the bobbin-heads.
Having described my improvements in spools or bobbins, what I claim therein as. new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a spool provided with heads formed of pressed pulverized leather, substantially as specified.
HENRY M. GUY.
