Application filed m ar 'z s; 1232a Serial no. 83,498.
My invention relates to clamps, and more particularly to devices for securely holding a scraper blade in position so that it may be sharpened.
As is well known, the blades used in connection with floor scrapers frequently require sharpening, and so far as 1 am aware no devicehas heretofore been proposed for holding said blades in position so that they may be sharpened. w I j I t accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of device com p'rising a set of stationary and movable members for firmly holding a floor scraper blade in position so that it may be sharpened, a
suitable base, equipped with an adjustable support, if desired, being provided to hold said base in convenient position, a preferably spring-pressed means being associated with at least one of said members for ac commodating blades of different sizes, and for holding and releasing said blade.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel form of device which is simple in character, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, composed of a minimum number of parts, and one which will thoroughly and reliably effect the objects intended.
Further objects and advantages of my-invention will become more apparent as the description thereof proceeds.
Reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar parts. In the 'drawings,
Fig. l is a top plan view of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 1, but of a slightly modified form of my invention,
Fig. 4. is a transverse cross-sectional view on the line 44, Fig. 1,
Fig. 5' is an end elevational view of the form of my invention depicted in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, showing the device in position so that the blade may be sharpened, and
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a modified form of my invention.
,Describing my invention more in detail, my improvement comprises a base 1 of any preferred configuration and material, such as wood, cast iron, pressed material or the like, and in the form shown in Figs, 1-5
equipped with a cut-out or bored portion 2,
which portion is adapted to house a movable member or jaw 3 provided'with a cut-away or bent portion a to be engaged by the blade 5 to prevent said blade from slipping; The U jaw 3' may be formed of any material in practice found desirable.
Mounted upon the base 1 by any means preferred, such, for example, asby ordinary screws or bolts 6, is a plate 7 of any desired configuration, and material, said plate being equipped with a stationary aw or member 8 bent over from the plate 7, or associated therewith in any manner desired. If preferred, also, the jaw 8 may be constructed 7o like the jaw 3. The jaws 3 and al coact to hold the blade 5 firmly in position so that said blade may be sharpened. i
To provide for adjustability, and to accommodate blades of" different sizes, a rod or other reciprocating member 9 is positioned in a bored portion 10, said rod being screw-threaded as at 11 to accommodate a ring-nut 12 or other device for adj usting and securingpurposesl The rod 9 is provided 30 with ahead 13 to engage with the movable and positioned between one wall of the cavity or cut-out portion 2' and the jaw Sis a helical spring 14, which spring holds the jaw 3 in resilient relation with the blade 5, and thus; functions to accommodate blades of different sizes.
Asseen-more-particularly in Figs. 2, 4E and 5, the base 1 may be equipped with an adjustable or pivoted support 15', provided with an element 16, to engage with the base 1 to prevent the device from slipping. The support 15 may be omitted, if desired, as shown in Fig. 3.
. In the form of invention depicted in Fig.
3, the elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10', 11', 12', 13, l l are precisely formed as previously described in connection with the other form of my invention, and ac"-v cordingly the description thereof need not be to abut against the jaw 3", which jaw is also proviclml with a. cutaway portion 4:" funeiioning as; previously explained. A helical sp ing ill is positioned between the device 6 and die jaw ii. also for a purpose previously described. The threads 11 are 1)i.'() yided to .me engaged by the wing-not 12.
