REVERSIBLEeICE-CREAM CAN AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 21,
My invention relates to a reversible ice cream can, although it is not limited in its use to ice cream, and it has among its salient objects to provide a can with two compartments in its opposite ends and so constructed that either end can be put down into the keg or other ice holding container; to provlde a cover for each end of said can which canbe tightly secured upon the can with a packlng joint and the top of which cover is free from projections above the surface or plane of the top surface thereof; to provide a combination handle and tag-receiving pocket for each cover, whereby-the cover can be easily and conveniently handled and removed and at the same time" can-be used to indicate the kind of ice cream or other content in that particular end of the can; to provide on the can, near the lower edge of the cover, a
beveled annular member as a guard over the joint between the outer surface of the can and the inner side of the cover flange, whereby to prevent ice and salt from'filling into the angle or corner and possibly working between the cover and the can; to provide means for wedging the cover on to the can by a turning operation; and, in general, to provide a simple, economical and practical duplex ice cream can, either end of which can be put down in the packing keg or other holder. E
In order that others may clearly understand my invention, I have shown one practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can embodying my invention, portions being broken away to show the interior construction and arrangement.
The can as here shown for illustrative purposes is a round can of cylindrical form, designated 1, with an intermediate-partition, 2, joined to the inside of the can by means of a double or forked edge, as at 3, thus giving a reinforced connection between the partition or floor and the side of the can and providing each chamber in the can with a dished bottom or floor. The opposite ends 0f the can are provided with a beveled, an-
nular member, 4, around the can and below the top edge, substantially as indicated.
The ends of the can are provided on their outsides near the beveled members, 4, with tapering lugs, 5, 5, extending circumferentially a short distance for securing the top 1926. Serial No. 123,833.
in place on the can in a manner to be described. V
The top or cover for the can is designated, 6, and has a dished or concaved central portion, 7, with a cross member or portion, 8, forming a handle having its top flush-with the top of the cover proper, and having therein an open pocket, 9, into which can be placed a tag or ticket to'tell the kind of ice cream, or other content, in that end of the can. Said cover has outer and inner flange portions, 11 and 10, forming a downwardly opening annular channel, 12, within which is placed a gasket or packing, 13, adapted to rest down upon the top edge of the can, in the manner indicated. Said cover outer flange, 11 is provided in its lower inner face with tapering lug portions, 14, 14, corresponding to the lug portions,
,5, 5, and adapted to turn end to end under said lug portions, 5, 5, as the cover is placed on the can and turned, said overlapping lug portions, 5. 5, and 14, 14, operating to draw the cover down tightly upon the can as the cover is turned. To release the cover, it is only necessary to turn it in the opposite direction. -Any desired number of said cooperating lug portions can be provided around the can, but it will be found that three will be suflicient.
Thus I have provided a smooth, tight fitting cover, free from projections, and with means for handling it and with means for carrying a tag or ticket describing the con tents for each end or compartment of the can. I have not shown a keg or box for packing said can in ice, but it will be readily understood that either end can be placed down, and that it can be covered completely Without danger of the salt or brine getting into the can, and that the can is easily reversed. if the contents of the lower compart- I ment is wanted.
I do not limit my invention to the details of construction and arrangement shown for descriptive purposes except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claim.
' I claim: 7
An ice cream can of the character referred to including a can body having therein plu2 ml compartments, each compartment having an OPfiIllIlg surrounded by a flange-like part of the body, a plurality of taper lugs around the outside of said flange-like part, a cover having an outer flange adapted to fit down over said flange-like body part and having llO on its inner face co-operating lug portions adapted to interlock with the lugs on said body part, a gasket in said cover adapted to fit upon and be wedged down upon the top edge of said body part, said cover having a concaved top With a handle portion across the same, and a depression formed in said handle portion with overhanging edges, forming a card receiving pocket, substantially as shown and described.
