Application filed August 13, 1926. vSerial No. 129,070.
My invention relates to display 'racks for displaying goods, and is especially usetul as a flower rack, to be used in connection with funerals or other occasionswhere a large number of floral'designs is to be displayed. 'My improved rack is so constructed thatit can be assembled without the use of tools, and can. be arranged in knock-downrelation and the parts packed together within cornparati-vely small compass of' space, sok as to bereadily moved from place to place.
\ A serious vproblem in funerals is vthe proper display offloral tributes. The usual practice' heretofore has been to' arrange the 'floral tributes' or designs upon the mantle, the casket, various pieces of furniture and the floo'r,`one tribute being often covered by another tribute so that a proper display of the floral tribu-tes was nothad.
lt is the object oi' my invention topi-ovi-de a. novel display rack of knock-down. torni, so that it may be easily carried from place to place; further', to Aprovide a novel display rack whichv is `readily assembled, preferablyr` without the use yof tools; further, to provide a novel display rack which is eX- t-ensible so as to vaccommodate agreater or less number of articles, for instance'iloral tributes; and, further, to .provide a novel display rack for floral tributes which iseX- tensible and collapsible, which may be readily assembled, for instance, at the late home ot the deceased, or the church, and theloral tributes displayed thereon, and-which may be quickly arranged in' knock-down rela-` tion for transfer to the cemetery', kwhere it may be quickly reassembled Jfor again res ceiving the floral tributes.

Fig. l() is a rear view of the rele'asable supporting connection between the sections of one ot'` the rear legs ,of my improved device. I,
My improved display rack includes a stand which comprises a plurality of side trames 21. The side frames are respectively composed of sections, whichhave releasable connection therebetween, and are varranged to be collapsed for knock-down relation 'of the parts. One ot these sections is shown as comprising bars 22, 23, connected at their 'front 'faces at top and bottom respectively by cross-strips 24, 25, of metal, screwed to the bars, these respective strips having overhanging lips 26, 27. The bars are connected at their rear 'faces by cross-strips 28, screwedr to the respective bars. A space 29 is thus formed between said bars. c
he other section of these side trames comprises a bar 3l, which has releasable and preferably telescoping connection with its mating section, tor arranging t-he sections in knock-down relation or'in extended-relation, asmay be desired. "This releasablezconnection is instanced as comprisingl a strip 32, ot metal, secured to the. bar 3l, as by screws, this cross-strip having laterally extending lips 33 provided with notches 34, the walls oi' whichare received under the heads of screws 35, screwed intothe'bars 22, 23. The bar 3l is also provided with a `screw 36, the cross-strip 25 being provided with a notch 37, the wall ot' which is received under the head ot the screw 36. These connections hold the bars in extended relations, and. support theupper section upon the lower sec tion of the side trame.
y These bars. andtheir connections form the front leg of the side trame.' The rear leg Aof the side frame is similarly constructed,
the upper section thereof comprising bars 42,43, connected at their rear 'faces at the respective ends` thereof by crossstrips 44, 45, andthelower section comprising a bar 46, the bar46 being provided with a crossstri'p 47secured thereto, and provided with overhanging` lips 48, providedwith notches 49 received under the heads of` screws- 50, threaded into the bars'42, 43, thebar 46 being'providedwith a screw 5l and the cross-strip 45 being Aprovided with a notch llt) 52, the wall of which is received under the head of the screw 51, for arranging said sec tions in extended relations. The front faces of the bars are connected by cross-strips 53. A space 54 is thus formed between the bars. These bars and their connections form the rear leg of the side vframe. "The sections may be arranged in telescoped knock-down relation, with the bar 16 received lengthwise in the space 54.
` The front ,leg and the rear leg of the side frame are connected together by means of a hinge 55.
A brace 56 is provided between the legs for arranging the same in. proper supporting relation. This brace is shown comprising strips 57, 58, hinged to the respective legs by screws 59, 60, and articulated to each other by a pivot 61,an overhanging` end of one of the strips being provided with a lug 62, received against the other strip, for placing said strips in bracing relation.
Cross-frames 71, 72, 7 3, connect the side frames rof the rack, and are releasably secured thereto. The cross-frames are arranged one above the other on the stand. The cross-frame 71 is provided with side bars 75, 76, at the respective ends thereof, and arranged to be received respectively at the inside face of the bar 22 and the outside face of the bar 23 for locating said crossframes endwise. The side bars are connected by cross-bars 77 78, to which the side bars are rigidly secured. The side bars extend above the upper cross-bar and below the lower cross-bar .for forming projections 80, 81. The upper projections 80 are received under the lips 26, and are arranged to be moved upwardly under said lips, due to the presence of a space 82 between the cross-strips 24 and the cross-bar 7 7 for permitting the lower extensions of the side strips to be moved rearwardly past lips 83, fixed to the bars 22, 28,
' whereupon the cross-frame is moved downwardly along the bars 22, 23, for moving the lower projections 81 of the side bars 75, 76, under the lips 83, the upward projections 80 thereof being sufficiently long to be positioned in rear of the lips 26 when the lower cross-bar 78 will have engaged the lips 88. The lips 83 are secured to the bars 22, 23, respectively, by suitable screws.
The construction and arrangement of the cross-frame 72 is similar to that of the crossframe 71, the parts being designated by similar reference numerals, with this difference, that the upward extensions 80 of the side bars are located in rear of lips 87, suit* ably secured to the bars 22, 23, the lower eX- tensions of said side bars being received in rear of the lips 27.
The rcross-frame 7 8 is similar in construction and arrangement of the cross-frame'71v,
screwed into the bar 81.
cross frame 73 being, however, shown different. hese positioning means comprise strips 91,02, secured to the-respective side bars, these strips being provided with notches 93 for permitting the strips lto be received under the heads of screws 94, 95,
In this instanceV the side bars 7 5,7 6, are closer together for accommodating the singlebar 31.
The cross-frames are provided withdis'i play frames which are arrangedl to be placed in various positions with relation to theV cross-frames, the cross-frames and displayframes being provided with attaching means for the goods to be displayed, which may be for instance fioral tributes, the lateral positioning of the display frames outwardly in overhanging relations to the cross-frames increasing the display, area of my improved device. Each of the cross-frames is shown provided with a pair of display frames 101, 102, which latter are arranged to be moved laterally outwardly for extending kthe effective area.
The display frames - compriseside bars 105, 106, top bars 107 and bottom bars 108, suitably lsecured together preferably in such manner as to locate all these bars in the same plane of the display frame. The end bars are provided with projections 109 which are located across the ends of the bars 7 7, 78, when the frames are moved inwardly. rThe bars 105 are shown of greater width than the bars 107, 108, and are provided with lips 110 received in the rear of the bars 77, 78, and have lips 111 secured to their front faces, which are received in front ofy thev bars `77, 78. This forms a slideconnection at one end for the slide bar.
1 The rear faces of the top and bottom bars 107, 108, slide upon the side bars 75, 76, and the bars 22, 23, and 81, respectively. The upper face of the bar 107 and the lower face of the bar 108 are guided between the cross-bars 77 78, and lips 112, secured to the cross-bars 77 7 8, coact with the front faces of the barsv107, 108, for guiding the slide frame. Impingement of the bar 105 against l the side bar 75 limits outward lateral movement of the slide frame.
The cross-frame and the slide frames are preferably provided with means for attaching the articles to be displayed, exemplified as hooks 115 on the cross-frame and hoo-ks 116 0n the slide frames. The hooks 116 may be located in blocks 117 secured to the slide frames. l f i In displaying floral tributes, thevarious floral pieces or designs may be attached to the hooks, or laid upon the frames, so as, if desired, to'cover the entire display rack and hide the latter.
-The area ofdisplay may bey regulated by the extent of outward movement of the display frames, anda suitable number of cross* frames may be employed, depending on the extent of display desired. f
In arranging the display rack in knockdown relation, the slide frames are moved inwardly. The cross-frames 71, 72, are pushed upwardly to release the lower pro- `iections 81 from thelips 83 and 27 respectively, whereupon the lower ends of the cross-trames are pulled forwardly and downwardly for releasing the cross-iframes from the stand. The cross-trame 7 3 is removed by pushing upwardly thereon and re leasing the cross-strips 91, 92, from beyond the heads of the screws 94, 95, whereupon the cross-frame 7 3 is pulled forwardly. for releasing` it from the stand.
The legs of the stand are next collapsed, accomplished by pulling apart on the upper and lower sections thereof for releasing the heads of the screws 35, 36, from their coactiiig plates, and then pushing` said sections together lengthwise. for telescoping the same, and arranging rthe bar 51 in the space 29 between the bars 22, 23. The sections of. the rear legs of said stand are similarly collapsed by releasing the cross-strips 45, 47, 'from the heads of the screws 50, '51, and then pushing the bars 42, 43, and the bar 46 lengthwise together, for arranging the bar 46 telescopically in the space 54 between the bars 42, 43.
The cross-brace 56, is also collapsed, whereby the collapsed front legs and rear legs of the stand may be folded together,
The Jframes 71, 72, 7 3, are arranged one upon another, and thefcollapsed legs are arranged lengthwise of said trames across one edge thereof, for compact arrangement ot the parts in collapsed relation, in which relation they are readily received in a case, or a cover may be folded thereabout, the case or cover being provided with a suitable han dle for ready carrying the display rack. The frame 72 may be provided with spacing blocks 118 for properly spacing the frames 72, 7 3, with relation to each other.
Having thus 'fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1.
