Description

28 2 June 19 7 w. G. PETERSEN boon OPENING DEVICE Fild Nov. 25. 1925 III/IIIIIIIII IIIII Y. Gang BYS,
Patented June 28, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. PETERSEN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL ELEC- TRIO DOOR COMPANY, 01' PORTLAND, OREGON, A TRUST ESTATE WASHINGTON.
' DOOR-OPENING DEVICE.
Application filed November as, 1925. Serial No. 70,822.-
My invention relates to door opening devices in general, and particularly to such devices as are applicable to garage doors the object being to provide a device that will enable the driver of an automobile to open or close the garage'doors conveniently from his seat within the automobile, Whether from the inside or the outside of the-garage. I accomplish this object by means, of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a part of this application. for Letters Patent, like characters indicating like parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which:
1 Fig. 1 isa diagrammatic view of my devlce.
' a Fig. 2 is a side elevation" of the motor and its attached parts.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the screw nut.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
In general my device consists of a motor with a screw rotated thereby 'a nut traveling upon said screw, a, dou le system of toggle arms connecting said hot with each 25 door, and a rod operating a reversing switch.
' The motor 5 is mounted within the garage upon any suitable support as shown at 6 in Fig. 2, and attached to said motor by means of the coupling 7 is a threaded shaft 8, said shaft being conveniently journaled at its forward end within a bearing 9 secured to the upper door sill 10. k A nut 11 is mounted upon the threaded portion of the shaft 8, and said nut is provided with oppositely extending lugs 12 upon which lugs are pivoted arms 24, said arms forming a portion of a toggle arrangement hereafter to be described. Said nut 11 is also provided with a lug 13 having an orifice therethrough to receive arod 14 parallel to the shaft 8. A switch box 16 containing an ordinary electric switch not illustrated in the drawin 'is mounted adjacent the shaft 8 and said switch is operated by an arm the end of which 45 is slottedto receive-a pin 17 secured upon the shaft 8.
The garage doors 18 are hin ed upon frame members 19 and are provlded with lugs 20 upon which are pivotally mounted portion of the Upon the frame member -10 are mounted lugs .21, and"pivotally mounted upon said lugs are arms 22, one end of each of said arms being pivoted to its respective arm 24, and the other end to its respective arm 23.
A stop collar 25 is positioned upon the rod 14 to contact with the lug 13 at each end of the travel of the nut 11, and thus to operate said rod to move the arm15 and reverse the switch within switch box 16.
threaded shaft 8 and thereby moves the nut 11 longitudinally thereupon. This movement of said nut operates the arms 24, 22 and 23 whichtogether form a toggle to open or close the doors 18.
An electric circuit is established from the As, the motor 5 rotates it rotates the I line through the switch, the motor and push button 26 in series to close the doors, and a.
similar circuit is .alsorovided includin push button 27 to open the doors, said pus 1 buttons being disposed within the garage. Likewise, and for the same purpose push buttons 28 and 29 are, located outside the garage, and are similarly connected. Thus 'the doors may be either opened or closed by manipulating the proper push button from either the inside or the outside'of the garage.
My invention may be made of any materials and constructed of any size deemed suitable and convenient for a device of this character, and while I have illustrated and described a form of construction and. arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing m invention, I wish to include in this application all mechanical e uivalents and substitutes that may fair y be considered to come within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having disclosed my invention so that others may be enabled to construct and to use-the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a door opening device; an electric motor; a reversing switch; a lever o eratin said switch; a threaded shaft rotate by sai motor; a rod adjacent and parallel to said shaft; a nut mounted to travel upon said shaft and 'said rod; tappets u on said rod to coaet with said nut at eac end of its travel to operate said switch throu h a connection between said rod and said switch lever; a lever fulcrumed at its central point; a. link connecting one end of said lever with nee lass said nut; and a link connecting the other end of said lever with the door.
In witness whereof I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto afiix my signature at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, this 25th day of November, 1924.
