PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN RICE, OF ADRIAN, ILLINOIS.
lMPROVEME NT IN DOOR-MATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,4] 1, dated May 18, 1875 application filed March 1, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN RICE, of Adrian, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Mats and other articles, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to a mat formed of corn-husks or analogous material, and a back piece or plate having screw-threaded holes iiito which the tufts or bunches of husks are screwed, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, it being a perspective view of a door-mat constructed-according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the back. B are the husks; and 0 represents the threaded cavities made in the back for the reception of the tufts of husk D, as seen in the drawing. The cavities O are made with a boring-bit one-half inch, more or less, in diameter, and a screw-thread is cut therein. The husks are doubled or clustered together, so as to form a compact mass at the end D, and are screwed in, the husks being compressed together and drawn in and held in position by the screw-threads.
The backs A may be made of metal, and the threads in the cavities 0 may be cast on a threaded mandrel, if desired. When the backs are thus made of metal the door-mat will be indestructible, and the filling may be renewed from time to time, as may be required.
It is evident certain kinds of brushes may be constructed on the same plan.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A door-mat formed of the back piece having screwthreaded cavities, and the tufts or bunches of corn husks secured therein, as shown and described.
. ORRIN RICE.
