Description
21 192 June 7 J. A. GARLAND TIRE CHAIN FASTENER Filed Nov. 25, 1925 ATTORN EY Patented June 21, 1927.
I JST T S' JAMES ACHILLES GARLAND, OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
TIRE-CHAIN FASTENER.
' Application filed November 23,1925. Serial No. 70,937.
- struction and arrangement of elementsdescribed, illustrated and claimed, it being un derstood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention;
In the drawings forming part of this application,
Figure applied to the ends of a chain, one of the link engaging devices being in open position, and
the other being in closed position. 7
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure of Figure 1. a
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 1 is a section on line 47 1 of Figure 2.
It may be assumed that the links 10 and 11 represent the ends of a chain to be secured to a tire. The fastening device for effecting this result includes a plurality of longitudinally extending members, constituting side elements and designated 12 and 13, these ele ments being of special formation and each including cutaway portion, such as 14, near opposite ends, and including the end portion 15. with each other by headed pins or rivets 16, and these elements pass through the pivoted arms referred to below.
An important feature of the longitudinal side elements 12 and 13 is the curved engaging portion 17 which is deflectedinwardly and downwardly with reference to the main portion of each of elements 12 and 13, this arrangement being shown in section in Fig-- ure 3. I
The links 10 and 11 are held by pivoted elements 20 and 21 which are mounted by means of the pins or rivets 16, between the end portion 15 of the side elements. The

bill of the hook, and when these elements are thrown to engaging position, that is moved inwardly towards each other, they pass through the slot between opposite elements 17, and are then deflected outwardly to the position of Figure 3, this result being secured by forcing into position an intermediate element. also shown in Figure 2, and the elements 21 and 20 are illustrated as being provided with v deflected end portions 24, providing engagement with the edge portionsrof elements 12 and 13. v
An important feature ofthe construction The locking position is is the resiliently and pivotally mounted key 7 designated 25 and provided with a notched portion 26. This element is pivoted at 27 and one flat portion thereof is engaged by a flat spring 28 secured at 29. Element 25 also has a fiat edge portion at 25, at a right angle with. that flat edge or portion first named, and the key 25 is therefor mounted and operated in the same manner as a knife blade, the
. notch however being in the end. Key 25 is forced to the position of Figure 3 andgretains elements 21 and 20 in the position there shown, but these elements may be released by moving the key to the position of Figure 1' and applying pressure at 24.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device'of the class described, a plurality of pivotally mounted jaws movable towards each other, means for mounting the jaws, said mounting means including jaw engaging devices constituting flanged elements formed on the mounting means, for retaining the jaws in position to hold the. end links of a chain, and a pivotally and resiliently mounted key movable between the jaws and vpreventing their movement in releasing position.
. In a device of the class described, a plurality of pivotally mounted jaws movable towards each other, means for mounting the jaws, said mounting means including jaw en- I gaging devices formed as oppositely located flanged portions of the mounting means, for retaining the jaws in position to hold the end links of a chain, and a key mounted to move about an axis parallel with the axes about which the jaws are movable, and into position between said jaws, preventing their 'rnovement to releasing position.
3. In a device of the class described, a plu- 5 rality of pivotally mounted aws movable towards each other, means for mounting the jaws, said mounting means including jaw engaging. devices for retaining the. jaws in position to hold the end links of a chain, and i a key movable between the jaws and prevent- 1 ing their movement to releasing position, the jaws each including a deflected end portion adapted to project outwardly at edge portions of the mounting ends.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES ACHILLES: GARLAND.
