WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed July 20, 1925; Serial No. 44,805.
The object of my invention is to provide. a washing machine of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, in which all of the mechanisms for operating the dolly are enclosed, to improve the looks of the machine and also to prevent children from getting hurt by the mechanism, as well as preventing the operators clothing from becoming entangled therein.
A further object is to provide in a washing machine having the dolly in the bottom thereof, improved means for actuating the dolly, said actuating means being mounted and connected with the dolly in such a manner that there is no need of packing the joints which soon become leaky.
A further object is to provide means for actuating the dolly of the class above described, a' large portion of which is designed to operate in the water in the tub, thereby providing lubrication for said mechanism.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: I

My improved washing machine comprises a body portion 10 which is formed substantially rectangular having side members 11 and end members 12. The partition 13 extends transversely between the side members 11 so that a substantially square compartment 14 isprovided, which is the tub proper. The tub 14 is provided with a bottom member-15 having a central-circular recess 16. The bottom of the tub is slightly inclined downwardly and inwardly toward said recess. A rack guide 20 is pivotally mounted on the lower end of the shaft 18, while its upper end is provided with a sleeve 21, the lower end of which is provided with a pinion 22, while the upper end of the sleeve 21 is provided with an upwardly extending square shaft 23.
The square portion of the shaft 23 is provided with a dolly 24 which comprises a disk 25 having a central upwardly extending 05 hub 26 which is provided with a square opening to fit the shaft 23. The disk is designed to normally rest in the recess 16 and has its upper surface provided with a series of radially extending agitator blades 27.
The body portion 10 is mounted on suitable legs 28 which are detachably connected therewith by means of bolts 29, the legs belng provided with suitable braces 30.
It will be seen that by providing the par- 7 tition 13, a compartment31 is provided at one end ofthe tub 14. One of the end members 12 is provided with an opening 32, said opening having a detachable plate 33. The compartment 31 is provided with a bottom plate 34 and a shelf 35, said shelf being designed to support an electric motor 36, said motor being provided with an extension shaft 37 which extends through one of the side members 11, as clearly shown in Figure,
3, theouter end of which is provided with a worm 38. The'worm 38 is supported in a gear housing 39 which is detachably connected to the side member 11 by means of bolts 40. The gear housing 39 is provided with compartments 41 and 42. The compartment 41 is designed to receive the worm 38 which is in mesh with a worm gear. 43, said worm gear being mounted on a vertical shaft 44 which extends upwardly through the'top of the housing 39 and provides means for actuating the wringer which isnot here illustrated as it forms no part of my present invention. The shaft 44 is provided with a spur gear 45 which is mounted in the compartment 42 and is designed to mesh with a spur gear 46 mountedon the upper end of a vertically arranged shaft 47. This shaft 47 is mounted in a suitable bearing 48 which is cast integral with the side member -11. The gear 46 is loosely mounted on the shaft 47 and operatively connected therewith by means of a clutch 49 which is splined to the upper end of the shaft 47.

tion 10, by means of screws 54. That portion of the cover plate above the tub 14 is provided with an opening 55 having a cover 56 secured in position by means of hinges 57. It will be seen that the opening 55 is some what smaller than the tub 14 so that an upwardly and inwardly extending flange portion is provided to prevent the suds from splashing out while the dolly is being actuated. That portion of the cover 52 which is over the compartment 31 is provided with a downwardly extending flange 58 which is on top of and in alinement with a partition 59. The flange 58 and said partition form a gear housing for the gears 45 and 46, thus providing means whereby said gears are completely enclosed.
The under surface of the bottom members 34 and 15 are provided with a channel or chamber 60, one end of which communicates with the chamber 17, while its opposite end is designed to receive the lower end of the shaft 47, said shaft having a crank 61 to which is pivotally connected one end of a rack bar 62. Said rack bar is designed to extend lon itudinally through the chamber and 130%12LV6 one end in mesh with the pinion 22, as clearly shown in Figures 4 and 6. Said rack bar is slidably mounted in the rack guide 20 which is provided with a back member 63 designed to rest against the outer edge of the rack 62 and provides means whereby the teeth of the rack will be securely held in mesh with the teeth of the pinion 22. It will be seen that the members 20 and 63 will be free to oscillate with the said rack 62 as the crank 61 is rotated.
Thus it will be seen that as the motor shaft 37 is rotated, the shaft 47 will also be rotated with the gear above described when the clutch member is in engagement with the gear 46,.which will cause the crank 61 to be rotated and the dolly 24 to be oscillated.
In practical operation the tub will be filled with water about three-fourths full in which case the chambers 17 and 60 will also become filled with water, and'the bearing 48 of the shaft 47 will also be filled with water to a point near the upper end of the said shaft 47 The compartment 41 is designed to receive a quantity of heavy lubricant for' the gears 38 and 43. The partition between the compartments 41 and 42 prevent any great amount of said lubricant from enter-- ing the compartment 42, so that there is no possibility of any'excessive lubricant working down around the shaft 47. The gear mechanism in the lower part of the tub is lubricated by the water and the oil from the soap.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a washing machine of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, the body portion of which may be formed of a single casting having a tub portion and a portion for supporting and mounting the motor and driving mechanism for the dolly in such a manner that all of said mechanisms are entirely enclosed.
It will further be seen that I have provided means for actuating the dolly in such a manner that no packed joints are necessary, thereby eliminating one of the most serious objections to that type of washingmachines in which the dolly is mounted in the bottom of the tub.
It will also be seen that I have provided a washing machine which is of simple and rigid construction and economical to build and operate. The cover member is provided with a drain board 66 which is designed to receive any drippings from the wringer, which is designed to be operated above said drain board. The water from said drain board runs back into the tub 14.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a washing machine, a side and end members, a bottom member, said bottom member being provided with a central recess, an upright stub shaft in said recess, a sleeve rotatively mounted on the upper end of said shaft, a dolly mounted in said recess, means for detachably connecting said dolly with said sleeve, and means for imparting oscillatory movement to said sleeve.
2. In a washing machine, a tub having side and end members, a bottom member, said bottom member being provided with a central recess, an upright stub shaft in said recess, a sleeve rotatively mounted on the upper end of said shaft, a dolly mounted in said recess, means for detachably connecting said dolly with said sleeve, a gear mechanism mounted adjacent to one side and near the upper edge of said tub, said gear mechanism eing provided with a downwardly extending shaft and designed to impart rotary movement thereto, means for operatively connecting the lower end of said shaft to the said sleeve for imparting oscillatory movement thereto, the last said means being designed to operate within the water in said tub.

A washing machine comprising a substantially rectangular body portion, a part1- tion for providing a tub at one end and a gear compartment at the opposite end, the bottom of said tub being provided with a central upright shaft, a dolly rotatively and detachably mounted on the upper end of said shaft, a channel or chamber in the bottom of said tub, and means mounted in said channel for imparting oscillatory movement to said dolly.

A washing machine comprising a substantially rectangular body portion having a tub at one end and a gear compartment at the opposite end, the bottom of said tub being provided with a permanently fixed upright shaft, a sleeve rotatively mounted on the upper end of said shaft, the lower end of said sleeve being provided with a pinion, a doll detachably connected to the upper end 0 said sleeve, the bottom of said tub being provided with a channel, a rack bar in 531d channel, a vertical shaft, the lower end:
of which is provided with a crank operatively connected with one end of said rack bar, a spur gear loosely mounted in the upper end of said vertical shaft, a clutch for operatively connectin said spur .ear with said shaft, a second s aft mounte parallel with the first shaft, a spur gear on said second shaft in mesh with the first spur gear, a worm gear on the lower end of said second shaft, a motor in one compartment of said body portion, said motor being provided with an extension shaft, the outer end of which is providedwith a worm pinion in mesh with said worm gear, substantially as described and for the purposes stated.
6. A washing machine comprising a tub having a bottom and side members, a dolly located near the bottom of said tub and designed to o erate beneath the water line, speed reducing mechanism mounted on one side of said tub above its water line, and means operatively connected with said speed reducing mechanism for impartin oscillatory movement to said dolly, the ast said means being located between the dolly and v the bottom of said tub.
