, ings, 10 designates a post having an eyeli clamp, t
' An object of the" invention is the. provision of a device which is adapted to automati cally clamp the free end or a portion of a clothes line to a fixed support and in whlch it'is only necessary'to insert the line in the device whereby the weight on'theline will increase the clamping action for aiding 1n maintaining the end oftheline against movement.
A further provision of a simple, efficient and durable device adapted to clamp the end of the clothes line to a fixed support and in which a slidably mounted jaw is adapted to be au tomatically actuated by the weight on the line for aiding in maintaining the jaw in rigidclamping relation with the line.
This invention willbe best understood from a consideration of the'ii'ollowing detailed description in view of the accompanying drawings forming a partyo-f'the specitication; nevertheless, it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the disclosure, being susceptible of such changes and modifications which shall define no ma terial departure trom'thesalient features of itheinventio'n asexpressed in the appended claim. g V v Figure 1 is a longitudinal view in eleva- 'tion of a clothes line secured. in positio nby I my improved device,
Figure 2 is a side view in elevation of the Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the opposite orouter side oft he clamp, and
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken along the line 14 of Figure 2. r y
Referringmore particularly tothe drawa secured therein and to which'one end of a rope 12 is secured.
' substantially parallel to the inclined edge 18,
The other end 13 ot the ropeis adapted to be secured to a fixed support 14 by means of a clamp generally designated'bythe numeral 15. v j
The clamp includes a housing formed of onevpiece of sheet metal and comprises a side wall 16 having a horizontal top 17 with the side well "being inclined to thev horizontal along the lower edge as shown at 18. The side wall is provided with a slot 19 which is but is inclined at'an acute angle to the horizontal top 17. Rising from the inner end of the top member 17 is a'securing flange 20,
object of the invention is the while-a "securing flange '21 extends laterally "from/the inner ed e of the "side; wall 16.
These two flanges are adapted tobe secured to the fixed 'support'l l.
Slidably mounted in the a housing is a clamping bar 21 of substantially wedge formation and is provided with a plurality of teeth 22 along its upper edge. The clamping bar is maintained in position within the housing and with the teeth 22in spaced relation with the top 17 by means of a pair around the end-of the clamp block and seatedge of the clamping block 21.
The rope 12 is secured at one end to the eye 11 of the post 10 and the other end of the rope is inserted within theclampingdevice 15 with the free end being threaded through the curved groove 28 ,at the rear of the clamping member 21 and over the top and laid in engagement with the teeth and seated within the curve 27oF said teeth, the free end then being permittedto hang downed within a groove 28 on the inner lower wardly as shown in Figure 1.. A pull on the rope 12 when the clothes are applied to; the same, thus weighting the clothes line will tend to pull the sliding clamp 21 out wardly of the housing and cause the teeth to bite into the rope as the'rope is being compressed between the inner iaceoft the top 1 Due to the lact that i the pull on the rope and likewise ou the 17 and the teeth 22.
clamp 21 is along a line bclowthe screws 23 of the free end of the rope while' tending to and 24, the clamp will be forced outwardly l and upwardly and thus prevent release prevent undue cutting or clamping ot' the rope by the pressure of the clamping member 21 on the end of the rope which'is lockedbetween the teeth 22 andthe top 17. r
- .I claim:
- A clamp comprising a housing having a top and a side wall provided with a slot located at anangle to the horizontal, a
clamping" block in the housing and a pluo 10 clamping iug provided with a groove to receive a p01 tion of the rope which is disposed inwardly of the free end so that a pull on the rope will cause the rope to engage around the groove to exert a pressure on the block and force said block towards the main body of the rope so that the teeth of the block will clamp the free end of the rope against the top of the housing.
