UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

PUK? B INPELLEB.
This invention relates to pum s or impellers, such as may be employed, or example, in impelling iuids such as air or water, the particularimpeller here shown being adapted for use in wells.
The general purpose of the invention is to provide an improved, self-contained pump capable of easy and inexpensive manufacture.`
Another particular object of the invention is to provide a combined motor and pump or l inlpeller construction in which the rotor of the motor comprises a revolving field which rotates about a fixed armature and which carries the impellers of the pump.
rilhe foregoingand other objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described below. it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form thereof shown and described.
0f the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a vertical diametral section through a pump illustrated in a well; and
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a, cylindrical casing having a 'l1' and a conical bottom 12 suction pipe 'tom 12 and a discharge pipe 14 to the top 11.
Gasing/bottom 12 is formed with a spider 15 supporting a bearing 16 in which is secured, as by a key 17, a hollow shaft i8 which is supported at its upper end by a bearinfr 19 1n a motor casing 2O which is journaled at its upper end in a bearing 21 secured on a spider 22 in the casing top 11 and at its lower end in bearing 17 'at 23, the bearing 23 beinl packed as at 24 against leakage of Huid mto casing 2() whichis con- 'sti-acted to be water-tight throughout. `Casing 20 may also have bearings on shaft 18 at 25 on a flange 18a on said shaft and at 26 so that motor casing 20 will be freely rotatable about shaft 18.
Secured on the outer side of casing 20are impellers 27, 27, and arranged on the inner side of casing 10 are vanes 28, 28 with which impellers 27 are arranged to cooperate to pump liquid throughcasing 10 from the inlet 13 to the outlet 14 about the Ingrid-tight casing 20.
Fixed on shaft 18 within casing 20 is the armature 29 and secured on the inner wall of casing 20 and encircling said arma- 10 represents conical topA secured thereto, a 13 being connected to the botture is the field 30 of any suitable type of motor, which may be su plied with electricity by means of a lea cable 31 extending into casing 20 through bearing 16 an hollow shaft 18, cable 31 being led up out oi the well from the pump to a source of supply of electricity.
The operation of the pump will be unl derstood from the foregoing description. Briefly, it may be described as follows:
After the pump is in situ, the electricity is supplied to the motor, causing the field 3() to revolve about armature 29 and thus rotating casing 20 which completely encloses the motor. Vllhe impellers 27 pump the liquid upwardly through casing 10 about casing 20 into the discharge pipe i4.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims. By suitable modification of the construction shown it may be employed for suction fans and other types of liquid or gas impellers, the essential feature being that the fluid impellers are secured directly onto the revolying member of the motor whereby use of shafting, belting, gearing, etc., between the rotor and the impeller is obviated.
What is claimed is:
1. A self-'contained pump comprising a pump casing, a fluid-tight motor casingl rotatable within the pump casing, an impeller carried by the motor casing, a vane on the pump casing with which the impeller cooperates, a fixed hollow shaft extending through the motor casing, a motor armature secured on said shaft, a motor field secured within the casing about the armature, nd means leading into the pump casing and through the hollow shaft into the motor casing-for supplying electricity to the' motor.
2. A self-contained pump comprising a pump casing, a fluid-tight motor casing rotatable within the pump casing, an impeller carried by the motor casing, a fixed hollow shaft extending through the motor casing, a motor armature secured on said shaft, a motor field secured within the casing about the armature, and means leading into the pump casing and through the hollow shaft into the motor casing for supplying electricity to the motor. e 3. A self-contained pump comprising a pump casing, a fluid-tight motor casing rotatable within the pump casing, an impeller carried by the motor casing, a
fixed motor 'l armature within the motor casing, a motor tatable therein, an electric motor housed eld secured to the casing about the armawithin' the second casing` for rotating the ture, and means leading into the pump cassame, and impellers upon the second casing l ing and into the motor casing for supplying for pumpinl liquids through the first casl electricity to the motor. lng around t e second casing.
4. A pump comprisin in combination, an outer casing, a second uid tight casing ro- HARRY WHITE.
