.KDVERTISIIK? SIGN Filed Feb. 2, 1927 L. R. ANDERSON INVENTOR BY i z 5 AT'TOmiEY 1 Patented June 7, 1927.
UNITED STATES LORI R. ANDERSON, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ADVERTISING SIGN.
Application filed February 2, 1927. Serial No. 165,279.
The invention relates to display or advertising devices such as signs; and is especially adapted for use with commodities to be dispensed and of various grades and qualities,
as, for example, in the dispensing of oils or gasoline for automobile use. In the sale of oils, it is customary to provide various grades such as heavy, medium and light oils, as well as oils from different sources; and it is desirable to advertise these qualities in such a manner that the purchaser may be apprised of the quality and grade of the product he is receiving, as well as the cost thereof. To this end, it has been customary to aflix to the pipe, forming the outlet from oil pumps to nozzle, signs upon which are suitable legends giving the desired information. As it becomes necessaryat times also to change these signs as well as to aflix the same to pipes of slightly varying diameter,
it is particularly desirable that the same be readily attachable and detachable from the supporting pipe or the like and capable of slight adjustment.
it is the object of the present invention to provide an adjustable and readily attachable and removable sign or display member of this character and which shall be of simple, rugged and comparatively inexpensive construction. To this end, the invention comprises a sign member of but two parts and requiring merely a clamping means as apair of bolts and nuts therefor, or similar device, to secure the sign rigidly in position.
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the novel sign attached to an oil dispensing tank as one object with which the sign member may be associated.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the novel sign member; and
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, designates a suitable dispensing tank for oil or the like and which is shown by way of example as one of the objects to which the sign member is applicable. The said tank is provided with the usual outlet pipe 11 through which the oil is customarily dispensed; and the sign member 12 is designed to be attached thereto in manner hereinafter set forth. The
size and particular shape of'the display portion proper of said sign member may be varied to suit; and at its lower end it is reduced in width to provide an extension or neck portion Ll provided with two vertically disposed slots 15.
circle, being convex outwardly as indicated. more particularly in Fig. 3, while at 1ts extreme outer edge it is turned backwardly upon itself to form the outwardly directed lip 16.
derstood thatthe bulged or sen'ii-circular portion at its lower end is designed'to fit over the pipe 11 and conform substantially to the diameter thereof, it being noted that the said display portion and the holding portion are integral with each other.
n In order to maintain the sign securely in position upon a support as the pipe 11, a further clamping or locking element is associated with the sign portion aforesaid, or rather the neck portion 15 thereof; and comprises a plate having a straight portion 17 similar in width to the neck 14 which straight portion is continued outwardly and bent to substantially semi-circular form as at 18, being concave to surround and conform to the other half of the support 11. At its lower end, it is extended substantially tangentially and then turned inwardly to provide a hook 19 designed to fit about and lock over the lip 16 of the sign portion 12.
The straight-away portion 17 of the rear clamping element, moreover, is pierced to provide a pair of openings 20 which are designed to register 'with the slots 15 to allow of vertical adjustment and slight separation of the clamping element relatively to the cooperating element of the sign member for alfordingsullicient play in initially adjusting the parts and accommodating pipes of varying diameter. Thereupon, by means of bolts 21 placed through the said slots and openings, the clamp members are brought together as by drawing up nuts 22 thereon.
In this manner, the sign will be securely and rigidly located with reference to the supporting member and will be firmly held in position; but may conveniently be replaced or removed merely by unloosening the nuts and bolts and dropping downwardly the rear clamping element. Furthermore, a slight separation of the members is possible whereby the sign may be adapted to pipes of vary- The outer end of said neck portion is bent mto the form of a semi-l The aforesaid member constitutes the sign portlon proper; and it'will be uning diameter, the clamping means serving then to hold' the sign as a whole rigidly in position.
I claim:
1. A detachable advertising sign, consisting of a'suitably shaped plate member for receiving display matter and having a narrow extension with intermediate convex portion curved substantially to asemi-circle and the extreme outer end of the extension being turned outwardly to provide a locking lip; a clamping element adapted to cooperate with theconvex portion for affording a substantially circular holding member and'consisting of a narrow st ip having an intermediate concave portion curved substantially to a semi-circle, the lower end thereof being bent over to provide a hook to receive the said lip; and means to removably secure the upper portion of the clamping element and the upper portion of the said narrow extension to each other. -e
2. A detachable advertising sign, consisting of'a suitably shaped plate member for receiving display matter and having a slotted narrow extension with intermediate convex portion curved substantially to a semi-cir cle and the extreme outer end of the extension being turned outwardly to provide a locking lip; a clamping element adapted to cooperate with the convex portion for aiiording a substantially circular holding n1emher and consisting of a narrow strip pierced at its upper portion to provide openings aligned with the slots of the said narrow extension and having an intermediate concave portion curvedsubstantially to a semicircle, the lower end thereof being bent over to provide a hook to receive, the said lip; and bolts fitting through the said slots and openings and nuts working thereon to removably secure the upper portion of the clamping element and the upper portion of the said narrow extension to each other.
In testimony whereof i affixmy signature;
