WA I JQWENTORK ATTORNEY Patented `lune 7, 1927.
lUNITED STATES WILLIAM: I. SILVERSTEIN, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR MAKING VENTILATORS FOR` WEARING- APPAREL.
Application filed November 15, 1924. Serial No. 756,187.
My invention relates to machines ttor orniing and stitching tape in strips provided with ventilating openings to he embodied in articles of Wearing apparel; and its objects are to feed the tape to the stitching mechanism While forming Ventilating openings in the work, to coordinate the feeding means and stitching mechanism, to provide al nen7 guiding meel anism for forming the Ventilating strip, and generally to simplify and make more effective the operation ot the several parts or' the machine.
Attention is hereby directed to the accom punying drawing, in Which similar n'unierals oi designation reifer to similar parts throughout the several views: 'gui-e 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. Q. is a horizontal section on line Q- ot' F g. l looking in the direction et 4the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section ou line 25m?) ol' 1 looking` in thc direction olf the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, upon the stitching machine l which is olf the usual construe tion well known to the art, l mount my improved mechanism for Afeeding and forming the Ventilating strip. l? or this purpose the shaft 5 is provided with a helical gear (i, which is secliufed thereto by means otl the sleeve and set screw ifi, the said sleeve 7 being integral Awith the sa' l gear. At one end of the shaft are the pulleys 9 and 10, which are connected with a suitable source of power.
Meshing with the helical gear (i is the helical gear 11 mounted on the shaft 12, which is journaled in suitable hearings to the bracket .13 fastened to the main iframe. Also mounted upon the shaft .l2 is the small gear 14, which meshes with the gear 15 mounted upon the sha'lt 1G, which is jour naled in suitable bearings in. the said bracket 13. Also mounted upon the shaft 16 is the beveled gear 1.7 which meshes with the beveled gear 1.8 mounted on one end. olf the shaft 19, the shalt 19 being journaled in suitable bearings in the lateral projections 2() and 21 of the bracket 18.
At the other end of the shalt 19 is mounted the beveled gear 22, which meshes with the beveled U'ear 23 mounted u ion one end end ol' the shalt 1G is provided with a crank 29, upon the tree cud oli which is mounted. the button 230. 'lue shank et said button 30 is shaped to engage with the slot il of the .linger 32. The linger is mounted upon the slide and the linger Q8 is mounted upon. the slide Sel. As will be seen lroin Fig. 1 the slide 33 is provided with .i tape opening 35 and the slide is provided with a tape opening 36. The loop secured to the table 38 of the main rainer encloses the said slides and A as does also the loop 39, whiehalso is mounted upon the main iframe. The loops 5? and 39 serve to keep the two slides 33 and 3dr in proper alignment.
In addition to the table 38, the apparatus is provided with the well. known needle 42 and advancing mechanism elfi). rThe idler roll is oit special construction, the periphery thc-reel. being provided with spikes which, co-operating with the mechanism 119, prevent the lateral displaceu'ient o'l" the Work while lgieing sewed by the needle .llhe liliread and mechanism VFor leerling the saine to the needle is old to the art, and for the purpose ol clearness is .not shown in the drawing. rlfhe stitching mechanism is operated from the sha'tft h in the manner well known in the art.
'.lhe operation of my improved machine is as ilollovfs: The tapes 5U, 5l and 52 are .ted into the tape openings 35, 36 and Lll respectively in the front olf the machine, the opening L.ll being stationary, and acting as a guide lfor the tape 52. As the tape is being ted and is drawn in by the aid or.' the idler roll ltl and the advancing mechanism 49, the slides 33 and 3er slip laterally one upon the other to criscross the tapes 50 and 5l., the tape 52 proceeding1 through the ma chine in a straight line. At the saine time the needle 4t2 operates to sew through the central tape 52 and through the tapes 50 and 51 at .said crossii'igswhile being held against lateral displacement by said roll d8 and mechanism 4:9. The arrangement oil parts and timing o'l'" the gears is such that when the cranks 25 and 29 are in a horizontal position, the tape openings 35 and 36 are. at their greatest distance Afrom each other, and when the said cranks are in vertical position, the tape opening 35 is directly over the tape opening 3G, the result ol: such arrangement being to form the tape into the vei'ililating strip 15. (See Fig. .As Will be observed the Ventilating strip is provided with the lll openings 46 and` has aline of stitching 47 directly through the center thereof.
'Through my construction of the strip forming mechanism hereinbefore described ipx said strands cooperating with said slides,
vfand my modificationofY thestitching mechanism thereof, Il have providedan apparatus Which is new to the art and'tor the inven tion of which I believe myself tojbe entitled to thebroadcst protection. vl/Vhile I,
