C. F. CUNNINGHAM ROPE Filed Oct. 7, 1926 Patented May 31, 1927.
UNITED STATES CLYDE F. CUNNINGHAM, OF CLARKSBURG, WESTVIRGINIA.
ROPE.
Application filed October 7, 1926. Serial No. 140,148.
This invention relates to cordage for decorative purposes in contradistinction to cords and ropes constructed from hemp, jute and like fibrous material to withstand pulling strains and hard usage. The primary purpose of the invention is the provision of' a highly decorative rope for use in Gaskets that will match the fabrics used in the interior of the casket.
The invention provides a rope having a center or core of fa'bric folded upon itself and a covering of fancy material, such as silk, satin or other fabric of any desired color and hue, the marginal edge portions of the covering being folded over the edge portions of the core just prior to the filial fold of the latter, whereby to hold the covering in place, the whole being twisted to secure the parts and present the usual .appearance of rope.
Vhile the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,-
Figure 1 is a. detail view of a portion of a rope embodying the invention, illustrating the manner of construction.
Figure 2 is a detail view of a length of rope embodying two intertwisted strands.
Figure 3 is a detail view of a length of rope embodying four intertwisted strands.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 1 -l of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
A rope constructed in accordance with the invention embodies a core 1 and a covering 2. The core 1 is of fabric and comprises a plurality of plies or layers, depending upon the diameter of the rope. The fabric is usually of.a loose weave and cheap, since strength is a minor consideration, the core providing the body of desired diameter. The center or core 1, is usually foi'med from a strip of fabric which is folded upon itself intermediate the longitudinal edges and just prior to making the final fold, the covering Af2 is pla'ced against the pile, as indicated most clearly in Figures 1 and 4, said covering being light and of a high finish, depending upon the effect to be produced. The covering is of a width greater than the pile and the marginal edge portions project and are adapted to be folded about the edges of the pile, as indicated most clearly in Figure 5, so that when the pile or core receives the final fold the marginal edge portions of the covering are confined between the edge portions of the pile or core, as shown most clearly in Figure 5. In the final step the strand is twisted, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1, thereby securing the parts and preventing separation thereof. The completed rope or strand is indicated at 8 and two of such strands may be intertwisted as indicated in Figure 2, or four of such strands may be intertwisted, as indicated in Figure 8 according to the required size of the rope and the effect to be produced.
A rope constructed in accordance with the present invention is highly decorative and is exceedingly light and is comparatively cheap and may be supplied in different sizes, colors and material, to meet the various demands of the trade.
Having thus described the invention, I
claim:
1. A decorative rope comprising a core of fabric, folded upon itself and a textile covering having its marginal edge por'tions broughttogether and confined between the folded edge portions of the core.
2. A decorative rope comprising a core of fabric, folded upon itself, and a covering of textile placed against a side of the core and having its marginal edge portions engaged about edge portions of the core and confined between said edge portions when the core receives the final fold.
3. A decorative rope comprising a core of fabric folded upon itself to provide a pile and a covering placed against a-y side of the pile and having its marginal edge portions engaged zrbout the edges of the pile and oonined therebetween when the pile is folded, the parts being secured by being twisted.
el. The lierein described method of producing a rope which consists in folding a fa'brio strip upon itself to form a pile, then placing u covering of greater width than the pile against a side thereof and folding the Inarginal edge portions of the covering aboutl the edge portions of the pile, then folding` the pile to bring its edge portions in opposition with the edge portions of the covering Confined therebetween, eend finally twisting the covered, pile or Vcore, tosecure the parts. t
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
