MORTON JUDD, OF WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,079, dated May 11, 1875; application led March 27, 1875.
CASE B.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MoR'roN Juni), of Wallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Sash-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
In Letters Patent No. 139,895, granted to me June 17, 1873, a sash-fastening is shown inv which the plate forming the top of the box is secured by the screw passing through the lever and forming the fulcrum ot' the same.
The present is an improvement upon the same.
It is usual to make the top plates of the sash-astenings with projections and indentations, to ornament the same. The consequence is that there is no opportunity t0 polish the prominent portions of such fastenings, because if plated or polished it could not be cleaned properly in consequence of the irregular surfaces, and the comparatively inaccessible position iu which the fastenings are applied.
I make the top plate of the box sufficiently thick to receive the attaching pin or rivet, and to provide for a smooth upper surface which is polished; and, in consequence of being free from projections, inequalities, or incumbrances, it can be wiped oft' and kept clean and lustrous with facility, thus greatly enhancing the appearance of the fastening, and preventing the objectionable appearance of such fastenings, especially when seen from the outside of the window. A
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan of the fastening. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same 5 and Fig. 3 is a section at the leverfulcrum.
The box c, lever-fastening b, catch-plate c, and cam-shaped bearings for the lever to catch upon, are substantially the same as in my said patent.
The cover or cap plate e of the box a is made sufficiently thick for the rivet or pivot screw t' that attaches the said cap plate e and the base-plate of the box a, and at the same time forms the pivot for the lever b. The top of this plate e is smooth and polished, and it is preferable to nickle-plate the same, so that it may be kept clean and ornamental by wipingl olf the smooth surface from time to time.
By casting the plate e with a rivet in it, as shown, the surface ot' the capmay be ground smooth, plated, and polished before the parts are attached together by riveting up the lower end of i, which can be done Without injury to the ornamental surface.
The under side 0f the cap plate may be made hollow at each side of the attachingrivet, so as to lessen the Weight.
I claim as my invention* The capplate e, to which the attaching screw 0r rivet c' is connected at its under side, so as not to appear upon the upper and smooth or polished surface, in combination with the lever-fastening b and box a, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 22d day of March, 1875.
