Description

RAIL TYING DEVICE Filed Feb. l2, 1927 n,- ind Patented May 3l, 1927. i
unirse STAT-ss ,PATENT ortica S'IA'ITLEY W. FINCK, `OIE WASHINGTON,'DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
Application filled February 12, 1927, Serial No. 167,781. i
This invention pertains `to `rail-tying -devices, and more particularly to vdevices by means of `w ing the major units of hich the railsand ties compriswhat is Acommonly `called a railroadtrack `may be Vfastened together securely;
The device `is shown in theaccoinpanying drawings wherein :-fy i Fig. l is a side elevation showing ythe tying device as itappearsy when in operation iniconnection with `a rail and a tie,
the tie being shown in cross section.
Fig; 2 is on the line l? ig. 3 is taken on th ln the drawings l a view, partly in section, 2-2 of Fig. l. l ,a plan view, partly insection, e line 3-3 of Fig, l.
denotes a f steel rail taken such asfis used in ordinary railway tracks, said rail having a base or flangeportion 2.
Sis a tie `an opening prevent the ber, o,
square shoulder which member `5 which is preferably square vto turning of the bolt-likermem lpreferably vhas a and I extends downwardly through the openings in the grab hoolst and connec nient 6.
ts with the tie-contacting ele- The preferred means of` fasteningthe rail to the tie by the use ofiny device involves, as Villustrated in the accompanying drawings, a U-shaped tie-contacting element 6 having ears 7 through which the bolts 5 pass and are secured in place by means of the nuts 8 and the washers 9. It is obvious,
however, that by using bolts long enough to extend approximately to the bottom of the tic a plain,
straight, tie-binding element may be employed in lieu of the U-shaped element shown.
The Ushaped element 6 is,
however, advantageous because ordinarily the ballast tie and cons element brings covers the lower portion of the equently the use of the U-sliaped the tensioning means nearer the top of the tie and thus renders it much more convenient to turn the nuts 8 and adjustthe tension of the device than when the longer bolts and straight tie-binding element are employed.
in operation the element 6 is placed under the tie directly beneath the rail l. The two pairs of gr position, ar rail flange,
ab hooks 4, with the bolts 5 in e hooked over the edges of the the bolts 5 are fastened to the i the drawings,
1, gether. 'l the use fof my present v invention is to ears 7 ofthetie-binding element G by means of thelnuts 8 and washers 9. It isv obvious that when these various elements are in por sition as described above, and as shown 'in it is necessary only to turn the nuts 8 in ord'ei to secure any desired ltension and thus fasten the rail securely lto side vand slid endwise under thetie without the necessity of displacing `any `great ,amount of ballast, f the arms-,of said member then being raised tothe upstanding position shown.
This device may, of course, be appliedto existing trackage bythe methods above sug-` i' gestedwithout the necessity of, loosening or disturbing in anyway the'ehxistingmeans ,(snch as spikes, tie plates, rail joints, etc.) in use for fastening the rails and ties to- Manifes'tly, therefore,y the effect of strengthen, toaiiy desireddegree within the limits ofthe strength of the jinetal Aused `in the device, the bond betweenthe rail ,and the tie. ,"lhe device is, moreover, simple` and inexpensive and can be installed on new or existing` trackage at a very low cost.
rllhe inventor of this device is aware of the United States Patent No. 1,191,025 covering grab hooks with adjustable connections extending uiider the tie but believes that his present invention contains elements which constitute a decided improvement over` the earlier device by reason of elimination ot unnecessary parts, reduced cost, increased strength, and increased facility of application and operation.
What I claim isfl. In a device of the class described, grab hooks adapted to embrace a rail flange, a tie contacting element, boltdke members adapt `ed tensionally to connect the grab hooks and `the tie and the U-shaped element;mayl be l placed on its i rail and the tie adapted to 'receive a vertically disposedboltlike member whereby and in conjunction with tie contacting means and -said grab hooks a rail and a tie maybe tensionally secured together.
3. In a rail-tying device, grab hooks each.
of which has at its lower end a perforation adapted for the receptioirof a vertically dis-`` posed ybolt-like member, and` tie contacting means whereby and in conjunction with the grab hooks and thelbolt-like member a rail may be'tensionally attached toa tie.
4c. A rail-tying device comprising a` bolt- I i like member, opposed grab hooks adapted to engage the edges of a `rail flange, eachof said grab hoolishaving at its lowerend a vertical opening for the reception of vthe bolt-like member, anda tie-contacting member whereby and in co-operation'with the ,grab hooks "and the bolt-like member a tie mayv be secured to a superlniposed rail.
5, In a device of the class `described the combination of a tie, afsuperimposed rail, tie attachment means, rail-grappling means adaptedto embrace the base flange of the rail, and a substantially vertical disposed bolt-likemember adapted to extend through aligned openings in the lower ends of the rail-grappling means and through a corresponding" opening in the` tie-attachment means, whereby the rail and the tiejmay be tensionally secured together.
6. j A device the class described comprising, in addition to a tie and a superimposed rail,` elements of but three types: grabliooks of siibstantially identical conformation adapted to embrace therebetween the base nflange of the rail;tie-attachment means, and
bolt-like means intermediate the grab-hooks andthe tie-attachment means, whereby the p may bewadjust-ably secured together. j j j,
7, A device of the class described compris- `tie-attachment means bolt-like member,
ing, "inadditionfto a tie and a superimposed rail,"tie-attachment means, a vertically disy posed bolt-like element and a grab-hook element consisting oftwoparts of substantially identical conformation, one of said elements havingf` *an opening through one portion thereof and the other element having a portion adapted to extend through said opening` whereby the two elements may be fastened together, and by means of which elements 'andjthe tie-attachment means the railand tie may be adjustably secured together.
8. Adeviceof the class described compris- `inga tie, a superimposed rail, tie-attachment means partially encompassing the tic, grabhooksenibracing `and suspended from the base flange of the rail and havingover-lappingends with aligned vertically disposed openings, the tie-attachment means having horizontally-disposed `portions with vertically disposed openingsin substantial alignment with the openings in the grab-hooks,
and bolt-like members adapted to` extend through theopenings in the grab-hooks and the tie-attachment means whereby and in conjunction. with said grab-hooksand said the rail and thetie may be adjust-ably secured together'.
9. A rail-tying device including tie-attachment means and comprising as one ele- `ment'grab-hooks of substantially identical conformation adapted to clasp the base flange of a railand as another element a suspended a portion ofone ofthe elements protruding through a` portion of the other element whereby the two elements are fastened together and by means ot" which elements and thetie-attachment means atie and a superimposed rail may be adjustalily fastenedtogether.
` In testimonywhereof I have affixed my signature.
