WILLIAM M. HANGE, OF DOVER, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANDPROTECTING ATTACHMENTS FOR DRILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,067, dated May 11, 1875 application filed March 29, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HANGE, of Dover, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Protecting Attachment for Drills, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a section of my improved handprotector, shown as attached to a drill. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same, partly in section, through the line or 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for attachment to drills and other tools operated by striking them upon the head with a sledge or other hammer while they are held by the hand, which shall be simple in construction, easily attached and detached, and effective in operation.
The invention consists in the combination of the slotted disk, the sliding block, the rubber block, and the swiveled screw with each other, to adapt them for attachment to a drill or other tool, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents an ordinary rock-drill, about the construction of which there is nothing new. B is an iron disk of any desired or con.- venient size. In the body of the disk B is formed a slot, b, the inner end of which ter inmates at the center of the disk, and is made of such a size as to fit upon the drill A. In the outer part of the slot 11 is placed a metal block, 0, upon the inner side of which is formed a recess to receive a rubber block,
D, and to its outer side is swiveled the forward end of a hand-screw, E, which works in a screw-hole in the said disk B. The rubber block D is made of such a size as to fit into the slot b.
By this construction, by turning the screw E back, the block or holder 0 and the rubber block D will be drawn toward the outer end of the slot b, allowing the disk B to be readily placed upon and removed from the drill A. When the disk B is adjusted in place, the screw E is turned forward, which forces the rubber block D against the drill A, so that the elasticity of the rubber may hold the disk from being jarred down by striking upon the drill with a hammer, and may bring said disk back to its place should it be struck by the hammer.
By this device the hand holding the drill will be protected from a miss blow, and from pieces of metal flying from the head of the drill.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with a drill or other tool, of the slotted disk B b, the sliding block 0, the rubber block D, and the swiveled screw E, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM M. HANGE.
