PRINTING PRESS.
Application filed January 22, 1926, Serial No.
The present invention relates to a new and improved printing press.
The main object of the invention 1s to provide an improved press which shall be simple, strong and durable in construction and adapted to yield the high-est desirable results in operation, and to provide an im proved inking-in device.
Other objects of the .invention relate to the provision of minor parts co-operating with the said device and to details of construction, all of which will be more clearly set forth in the following specification.
in the accompanying drawings two preferred constructions of the new printing press are shown in a diagrammatical manner by way of examples:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the press.
Fig. 2 is a crosssection on line A--B of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a section through a modified construction of the inking-in device.
Fig. 4. illustrates the inking-in device of the press according to Fig. l. r
Fig. is a sectional elevation of the modilied construction of the press.
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line CD of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 illustrates parts of the driving gear.
The press according to the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 comprises a frame in which the impression body 2 is mounted. In said body or platen 2 the types or form 3 are lined by any suitable well known means not shown in the drawing. In the body 2 a shaft 1 is rotatably mounted. A spur gear 4 keyed to shaft 1 engages a spur wheel 5 keyed to shaft 6 which is rotatably mounted in flanges of the body 2. To the ends of shaft 6 spur wheels 7 and 8 are fastened meshing with toothed annular gears 12, 13 respectively. Each of the gears 12, 13 is rigidly fixed to a guide frame 15 respectively 16 rotatably mounted on bosses of the body 2. Each guide 15, 16 is provided with two parallel bores 18 and in each bore 18 a rod 19 is slidably mounted. At one end of each rod 19 a head 20 is fixed and each head forms a bearing for two inking-in rollers 21. The rollers 21 run parallel to each other and consist of suitable material to distribute the ink over the types etc. Around each rod 19 a coiled spring 23 is arranged abutting with one end on body 2 and with the other on a collar rod 19, the spring 23 tends to press the rollers 21 against the cylindrical 83,129, and in Switzerland January 28, 1925.
surface of a drum 25 which is rigidly fixed to the body 2. The drum 25 and the rollers 21 serve to distributethe ink evenly in the manner well known. By turning the shafts 1 and 6 the guides 15, 16 are rotated and the rollers 21 are carried round and over the drum 25 and over the faces of the types 3 by which the impressions are made. While the rollers 21 run over the drum 25 in the direction shown by the arrow 32 the drum 25 receives a reciprocating movement in the direction indicated by the arrows 28, 29 Fig. 2. On the inner side of the drum 25 two rollers 26 are mounted on studs and co-operating with said rollers 26 are two cams 9, 10 rigidly fixed to the shaft 6. The shape of the cams 9, 10 is such that the drum 25 is moved to and fro while the rollers 21 run on it and the ink is evenly spread over said rollers. In a cavity of the body 2 a fountain 30 for the ink is provided in which a feeding roller 31 is rotatably mounted. The mantel of the roller 31 projects slightly above the surface of drum 25 in such a manner that the rollers 21 takeoff ink from said roller 31 and pass it on to the surface of drum 25. On the shaft 1 the main driving gear 33 is fixed which is positively driven by a gear not shown in the drawing. To shaft 1 a disk 35 is keyed and the gear 33 and the disk are each provided with a crank pin 34, 36 respectively arranged eccentrically. On each crank pin 34, 36 a link 37 is mounted which are attached to a rod carrying the plate 40. The plate 40 on which the paper 41 or other ma terial to be imprinted rests is moved to and from the types 3. While the rollers 21 run over the types 3 the plate 40 is in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and it assumes the position shown in full lines while the rollers 21 pass over the drum 25.
The press is especially used for printing loose sheets. The construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is adapted for continuously printing upon rolls or strips of paper, card or other suitable material.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 a frame 58 is provided having vertical slots in which blocks 59 carrying the body 2 are slidably mounted. To the shaft 1 a disk at one end and a spur wheel 43 at the other end are keyed, the spur wheel 43 being provided with a circular boss having the same diameter as disk 45. The parts 43, 44 and 45 are eccentrically positioned on shaft 1 and the parts 44, are rotatably mounted in links 53, 54 which are supported by disks 49, 51 forming parts of spur wheels 48, 50. The gears 48,50 are rigidly fixed to a shaft 47 running in bearings 46 of the machine frame. The gear L8 and the disks 4-9, 51 are positioned eccentrically with reference to the shaft 4 7 in such a manner that by rotating shaft 47 the shaft 1 and therewith the body 2 with the types 3 is raised so far that the inking-in rollers 21 may pass over the types 3. ()n being lowered the types 3 are pressed on to sheet 57 of paper, card or the like which is positioned on the plate 56 of frame 55. hile the body 2 moves up and down the shaft 1 is rotated and the inking-in rollers are moved round the drum 25 in the manner described above. The blocks 59 being rigidly fixed to the body 2 ensure the exact vertical movement withreference to the face of plate 56. The shaft 17 is mounted in bores eccentrically arranged in sleeves (it) which sleeves are rotatably mounted in the bearings 16. The sleeves 60 are interconnected by a bar 61 and one of the sleeves 60 is provided with an arm projecting outwardly. In said arm a pin 62 is mounted which engages one of a row of notches in the bearing 4-6. ihe pin (l2is held by a spring in engagement 1and with the notch. ,By turning" the sleeves 60 the shaft 47 and therefore the lowermost positionof body Qand types 3 may be varied to get a good impression on the paper 57. The gear 50 is (it'll/GT1 by a gear not shown in the drawing.
Instead of two pairs of inking-in rollers one pair only might be used as shown in Fig.
3 orthere might he more than two. The pitch diameters of the gears l, 5, '7, 12, 18 and 13 have to be chosen in such a manner that one pair of rollers 21 passes over the types 3 after eachinrpression, if there are two pairs of rollers 21 the sleeves 18 perform but a half turn for each impression. By unikina partition walls in the fountain inks of different colors might be used for printing at the same time, moreover several devices of the kind shown in Figs. (i may be placed one behind the other through which the paper band pass in sncr ion and successive iniprcssions of different color, etc, may be made 011 the same paper or it may he printed on both sides.
What I wish to secure by i iii. Letters Patent is:-
1. In a printing press a bed to hold a form. a rerolubie shaft extending through the bed from end to end, an ink cylinder concentric with said shaft and provided with a fountain inking, roller carrying means mounted for rotation and the axis of rotation of which is concentric with said shaft and ink cylinder, a countershaft geared to the first named shaft and to said inking roller carrying means, and means actuated by said conntel-shaft to impart rceipromiting motion to said ink cylinder, said means including: can'ia on said countershaft and tappet members in said cylinder coactingr with said cums.
S2. A printing, press comprising in combination a main press body, adapted to receive the form, a hollow cylinder fired to said body, fltltll'ltetl to be used for distriinlting ink, an inlring roller, adapted to run over said cylinder portion and lover the term, means positively to. more thefsaid inking; roller, a platen to receive the paper to he iui" printed, means to more the platen and the form with reference to each other, said means con'lprising a shaft 1 carrying; the said body 2a second shaft 457, eccentrics 45, 51 and a l, 49 on said shaft 1, t? links :73, 5dinterconnecting said ercentrics, and spur wheels 43, 4B meshing with each other.
In witness whereof I allii; my signature.
