UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN A. MORRIS, 0F WYQMING, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE RICHARDSON COMPANY, OF LOCKLAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CARTON.
Application filed March 12, 1925. Serial No. 15,034.
My invention relates to cartons, more particularly to cartons used in forming a bundle of separately packed products in which the cartons are so formed as to interlock with each other. Such a form of carton is valuable in connection with the packaging of electric light and radio bulbs.
Electric light bulbs are at present sold in cartons containing usually six lamps, each case being enclosed in a corrugated paper wrapper. In retailing the bulbs, it is very seldom that six are purchased at a time, and when less than six are purchased, then the dealer has to open a carton, select the desired number and wrap them up again.
It is the object of my invention to provide a form of individual carton which without glue, tape, or other added elements, that make for expense, is provided with closing flaps which engage the side walls or other parts of adjoining cartons, thereby holding any desired number together and permitting the quick detachment of the individual car-' tons required from a composite package of any convenient number for handling en masse.
It is my object to make up a composite package of individual cartons which in appearance is neat and compact, and does not become unsightly because of detachment of whatever cartons are sold from the package.
It is my object in cartons for electric light bulbs to provide, in addition, for platform structures which will retain the bulbs at the two ends, leaving a hole for observation at one end, and for contact with a current terminal at the other, in testing the lamps without removing them from the package.
It is my particular object in this last connection to provide the platforms as part of the usual end closing flaps of the carton, and in such case, as well as inthe instance of any inserted platform member, to retain the latform means in place by means of the interlocking closing flaps of my composite package. 1
These various objects and other advantages to be noted I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank for one of my individual cartons.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of two of the cartons attached to each other.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a separate platform member. 1
Figure 4 is a perspective of the platform member made up.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a form of my.
carton having an integral platform forming member.
Figure 6 is a perspective f a pair of cartons of this last illustrated type erected and joined together.
Referring to Figure 1, the blank for the carton has sides 1, 2, 3 and 4. The flaps 5 and 6 at both ends of the side sections 2 and 4, are slit as at 7, for a purpose to be described. The flaps 8 and 9, set at alternate ends on the sections 1 and 3, are formed of the full size of the end openings of the cartons, with additional flaps 10 on their ends, scored so as to be thrust down into the car 7 tons.
When such a carton is set up,,as illustrated in Figure 2, the flaps 5 and 6 adjoining each other can be arran ed with the slits 7 interlocked, bringing t e flap of one box in a position to be turned down into the adjoin- 1ng box.
As many as desired can be set up in a row in this manner, and each will be interlocked with the other both at top and bottom. In closing the boxes the flaps 8 and 9 are turned down with the end tongues thereon thrust into the. boxes. In removing desired numbers of cartons, they are merely broken from the packing, since the interlocking flaps will tear off.
As a platform member I make up a blank formed with two body sections 20 and 21 having laterally projecting ears 22 and 22" the glue flap down on the end of the body,
As an alternative structure, the closing flaps .8 and 9 may be made longer than in the first instance, as indicated in Figures 5 and 6. Thus the flaps will have scored portions 8' and 9, as Well as the tongues or flaps 10 on their ends. The portions marked 8 and 9 on' Figure 5 will be the size of the end of the carton, without including either the parts 10 or the parts 8 and 9, so that in closing the carton the portions 8 and 9 are thrust down into the cartons, bringing the portions 8 and 9 to a level below the edges of the portions 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the flaps 10 will stand up, instead of depending into the cartons. If desired, the carton shown in Fig. 5 may have additional flaps 11 adated to entirely close it, giving additiona safety in shipment. Preferably also the platforms 8 and 9 will be flanked with articulated flaps 8 and 9, which are cut out of the portions of the end flaps 5 and 6, where they impinge upon the latter,
as indicated in Figure 5.
By making up the composite package an then folding in the platform-flaps, these flaps hold the interlocking tongues in place. The portions 8 and 9 will have holes 8" and 9 for engaging an inserted light bulb.
The above description of two preferred forms of my invention have been described in detail as examples of my invention and the novelty inherent therein will be expressed in the claims that follow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1., A composite package with enclosing walls comprising individual container elements, having flaps of the several container elements engaging adjoining container elements and each container detachably secured to an ad'acent container by means of an engm ap. V 2. .5 composite package comprising individual cartons having end flaps arranged with slit connections with the carton, interlocked and depressed into said ad oining cartons.
3. A composite package comprising individual cartons having end flaps which are slit partially away from the carton bodies, and flaps with terminal tongues thereon which close the cartons at the ends, said end flaps of adjoining cartons being interlocked,
with each other, and the flaps of one carton folded down after such interlocking into the adjoining carton, and said flaps which close the cartons then folded down and their tongues thrust into the cartons.
4. A package for electric light bulbs having closing flaps having intervening articulated sections between them and the ends of the carton, said flaps having holes therein for engagement and exposure of such light bulbs, and means for detachably retaining the sections individually and in groups within the package.
5. A package for electric light bulbs having closing flaps having intervening detachable articulated sections between them and the ends of the carton, said flaps having holes therein for engagement and exposure of such light bulbs, and said flaps having terminal tongues, adapted to engage the one side wall of the carton, while the articulated sections engage the other.
6. A composite package comprisin individual cartons having interlocking aps so arranged that a flap from each carton can be engaged within an adjoining carton, and said flaps arranged accordingly in a composite package, and the flaps of those cartons which have flaps engaging adjoining cartons being detachably severable.
7. A composite package comprising a plurality of individual cartons detachably severable as units in which a portion of one carton enters an adjoining carton, thereby holding said units together.
8. A composite package comprising a plurality of individual cartons detachably severable as units, in which a member of one carton serves as the corresponding member of an adjoining carbon.
9. A composite package comprising a plurality of individual cartons detachably severable as units, in which means is provided for fastening said cartons together, comprising a functional member in each carton structure integrally united with an element in an adjoining carton structure.
