MOUNT FR THE TONGUES OF CIGARETTE-ROEFGRMLING MECHANXSM.
Application led June 5, .19%. Serial No. i
This invention relates to an improved mount for the tongue ot a cigarette rodformingv mechanism. Y
In the operation oi the present da7 hie-h* 5 speedcioarette machines.y the continuous smooth running oft the cigarette rod being; formed depends to a considerable extent on the accurate adjustment of the tongue in the rodorming mechanism, which adjustmentT ait'ter being' made for prevailing conditions.
should remain constant during' the entire machine run. But tinepart-icles ot dirt or tobacco sometimes work their wav in between thetonggue and tapered tube ot the rod-'forminor mechanism and tear the ei;- treinelv thin paper orcholre the mechanism. or both. Such obstructions must becleared away bet'ore operation otx the machine can proceed. In order to do this, it is necessariv to remover the tongue to open the rod-'toria ing mechanism and enable the machine onen ator to ,fet at the obstruction. l-Ieretoitore, when `this occurred, the machine operator M did not always replace the tongue in its proper place in the rod-formingn mechanism. and as a result of 'the misplacement ot' the tonifum the machine did not operate as smoothly as before. It is the main object ot the present invention to provide a mount for the tongue ot a cigarette rod-forming mechanism which is readilyv adjustable in great accuracy7 and trom which the tongue muv he demounted and on which the tongue may be reinounted, without disturbing' the accurate adjustment ot the mounta in order to cure the existing' detect of cigarette niachines above pointed out. lith this and other objects not spccificallj7 mentioned in view the invention consists in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter fully described and then specilically lset forth in the claims hereunto anpended. j
ln the accompanying drawings. in which il' like characters of reference indicate the same Vor like parts, Fig". lfis a plan view of a mount constructed in accordance with the invention; Q is aside elevation of the structure shown in Fig. l; Fig. n is a sec- O "n tional end elevation ot the adjusting device, taken on the line 3 3 in Figs. l and 2;
"u: Il is an enlarged side elevation of the ting device; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged end elevation ot the same. g
.in carrying; the invention into elliect. there is provided a mount 'tor the tongue of a cig'- Iir-ette rodlorining mechanism, coi'nprisinnga sunnorhiueaus 'tor adjusting said support to control the posit-ion oit the tongue in said mechanism. and `a device for demountalolv attachingsaid tongue to the adjusted sup noi-t. so that the tongue may he removed to onen the rod-forming: mechanism and per-` mit the rcinval therefrom ot obstructions.- and may be replaced aft-er removal. of said obstructions. without disturbing; the accurate adjustment of the support which is necessirv to hic-h machine output. Changes and variations .majY be made in the construction ot these parts within the scope ol the claims. The invention, therefore` is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described. j
liefert-ingr to the drawings, the adjustable tongue 6 coacts in the usual manner with the stationarv tube 7 supported on the traine ol the machine. The tongue is located between .l
the lcuide plates 8, 8g which are fastened to the tube T hv screwsf). The tongue G and tube 7 are both nearly` as broad as the cigarette wrapper at their receiving ends, and the size of the finished cigarette at their delivery ends. The wrapper l0.y with the tobacco ll evenly7 distributed on it,`is carried by the tape 1Q through the rod-forming mechanism t--12 the bore ot which gradualhv and j noejressivelv 'folds the wrapper around the tobacco in the usual manner so as to deliver it in the form ot a rod 13 to the sealer-guide le.
ln entering the rod-forming' mechanism, the wrapper 10 passes over a roller 15 car ried by a pivoted traine 16 which, by means ot' a worm 1T turnahle by means of the knob 18, can be adjusted so as to properly `guide the wrapper into the rod-forming mechas uisin. f
The `tongue 6, near its receiving end, is provided with a bracket 19 which, by means of the screw `20, attached to one ot' the guide plates S. Near its delivery end, the tongue is provided with a web 2l bv means till of which it is demountahly attached toits mounty which is carried hv one ot the guide ingnut 28( Operation ot this nut and the opposing spring,l Q7 produces longitudinal movement of the stem 24. tlierelojT laterally or horizontally adjusting the tongue 6.
For the vertical adjustment (it the tongue` the trame 9:2 has an adjusting screw 2) hearingag'ainst the block 255. and an opposing` spring 30 pressing' against the opposite i side ot the block.` Guidepins Sljnserted in the block 23, `prevent horizontal inovfenient thereof and keep the'hlock m Valignment with the frame22.
ln order keep the "adjusted mountv locked in any position to which it moved, the heads of the nut 28 and screw Q9 are serrated, and into the seriations snaps the point on the treeends oi flat springs 3Q and 33, respectively, as the heads are turned in either direction. These lock-springs also afford means for holding the mount infineljf adjusted position. A i j The tongue weh 21 is slotted at 34 for sliding engagement with the stein 24 in deinounting' and remountine;
llie tongue, once properly adjusted tor given conditions, can he removed hy simply loosening the screws 20 and 25 and Withd 'owing it lrom the tuheii'. Then it is replaced, and the screws again tightened, it will then again he in the exact vadjusted position from which it was Withdrawn. Thus. the tongue may he repeatedly removed and replaced without disturbing the accurate adjustment of the mount.
That is claimed is:
l. Afmoiiut ttor the tongue ot a cigarette rod-forn'iingr mechanism, comprising a support, means for adjusting' said support hoth verticali)v and liorizontall)T to control the position of the tongue in said mechanism. and a device tor demountahlv attaching; said tongue to the adjusted support.
