Application filed June 8,
The invention relates to washboards for laundering clothes and has for its object the provision of a washboard made entirely of sheet metal, preferably galvanized and including a base frame, having a base board, side bars, and a head bar, formed of a single piece of sheet metal, and a rubbing board removably secured to ing members being provided to hold the rubbing board in positionin the base frame, and a clamping member for the upper edge of the rubbing board forming the lower rail of a soap receptacle.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figue 1 is a front view partly in section of the improved washboard, v
Figure 2 a longitudinal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 a transverse sectional View on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1. In the drawings, similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved washboard has a base frame designated generally 1 made of a single piece of sheet metal and having a baseboard 2, and side bars 3, formed by bending the side edges of the baseboard 2 at right angles thereto as shown at 4 then bending the metal inwardly as shown at 5 and again toward the baseboard 2 as shown at 6, the inner edge of the ortion 6 being spaced apart from the base oard 2 to form a guide 7 to receive the rubbing board hereinafter. described. The side bars 3 are extended beyond the lower edge of the baseboard 2 to form the usual legs 8. a
The upper edge of the baseboard 2 is bent at right angles as shown at 9 and then bent to form a rectangular tube 10 and the edge 11 secured in any suitable manner on the back of the baseboard 2.
The rubbing board 12 is formed corrugated as shown, being also made of sheet metal,
and isslidably mounted on the baseboard 2 and in the guides 7. Clamping members to hold the rubbing board 12 in the base frame are provided, the clamping member for the lower end of the rubbing board comprising a strip of sheet metal bent in U-form as shown at 13 to enclose the lower edges of the baseboard 2 and the rubbing board 12 and has its upper edge bent to form a V-shaped bead the base frame, clamp.
1926. Serial No. 114,488.
1%. 15 indicates a rod engaging openings 16 in the flanges 1 and engaging the V-shaped bead 1 1 to hold the clamping member in clamping position.
The clamp for the upper end of the rubbing board 12 is also made of sheet metal having a V-shaped portion 17 to receive a rod 18 also inserted through holes in the flanges 4, a V-shaped head 19 being below the rod 18, while the end of the clamping member is bent inwardly as shown at 20 to form the bottom ofthe usual soap receptacle at the head of the washboard. The ends of the upper clamping member are bent back on the member as shown at 21 to stiffen and strengthen it.
In use, it will be apparent that when one of the rubbing boards 12 is worn out it may be removed and replaced with another rubbing board by removing the rods 15 and 18 and the clamping members engaged by said rods and a new rubbing board be clamped in position by returning the clamping members and the rods to their former position.
What is claimed is 1. A washboard comprising a base frame including a baseboard, side bars forming guides, a separate rubbing board seated on said baseboard and having its edges disposed in said guides, a clamping member for the upper end of the rubbing board having an angular flange forming the bottom of a soap receptacle, another clamping member for the bottom edge of the rubbing board and encl0s ing the bottom edge of the baseboard, and rods engaging the side bars and the clamping members to hold them in position.
2. A washboard comprising a base frame including a baseboard. side bars forming guides, a separate rubbing board seated 011 said baseboard and having its edgesdisposed in said guides, a clamping member for the upper end of the rubbing board having an angular flange forming the bottom of a. soap receptacle, a V-shaped portion on said clampeluding a baseboard, side bars formed by bending the side edges of the baseboard upwardly therefrom and rebending them inwardly and downwardly, the edges of said rebent portions spaced from the baseboard forming guides, a separate rubbing board seated on said baseboard and having its edges disposed in said guides, a clamping member for the upper end of the rubbing board having an angular flange forming the bottom of a soap receptacle, a U-shaped clamping member enclosing the bottom edges of the baseboard and rubbing board, and rods engaging the side bars and said clamping members to hold them in position.
in testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
