This invention relates to an improved device which may be conveniently designed as a retainer for a pocketbook.

One feature of construction is a retaining pin carried by one section of the frame, and a cooperating keeper carried by the other section of the frame, the same being associated so that the pin isno'rmally engaged- ,with the keeper when the pocketbook is being carried.

Another feature of construction is the novel means for controlling the pin, said means being operated by the chain so that as long as the chain is in vertical carrying position, the pin will be effective, and thus making it necessary to pull the chain downwardly in order to release the pin.

Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and drawing.

In the drawing the referencecharacter l designates one section, of the frame and the reference character 2 designates the complemental section. The frame is of ordinary construction, and is provided with the usualheaded. retainers 3 and 4. The two sections of the frame are hinged together in the customary manner, andthe section 1 is provided with an opening 5 to accommodate a keeper '6 on the frame section 2.

Carried by the frame section 1 are guides 7 in which a pin 8 is slidably mounted; the pin is provided with a shoulder 9 and a coil spring 10 surrounds it, bears against the shoulder at one end and against one guide in its opposite end, thusnormally moving the pin to the full line position indicatedin Figure 1. The left-hand end of the pin is beveled and cooperates with a beveled nose 11 on a sliding detent 12. The detent is mounted in a guide 13 and the lower end rests in a seat 14L formed atthe central por- 0 tion of a pivotally mounted lever 15. If desired, a spring 16 may be employedto normally move 7 the lever upwardly. One end of the carrying chain 17 is connected to the projectingportion of the lever.

pocketbook are closed together as shown in Figure 2 and weight is brought to bear upon the chain, this will, in conjunction with the action of the spring 16, move the lever 15 upwardly in a direction to press the detent 12 up and to engage the beveled nose 11 to the beveled end of the pin 8. The pin 8 will thus be moved in a direction against the action of'the spring and projected into the opening 5 and through the keeper 6, thus holding the two sections of the frame together in an obvious manner.. In order to release the pin, it is necessary to pull down wardly on the chain section 17 in order to move the lever 15 to the position shown in Figure 1. This allows the spring 10 to come into play to disengage the pin 8 from the keeper 6.

From the foregoing description it is obvious that I have evolved and produced a simple and inexpensive device for association with a pocketbook, the same serving asa safety appliance to prevent accidental opening of the sections to permit theft. No doubt byconsidering the description in connection with the drawing, a clear understanding of the invention will be had. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.

Minor changes coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is 1. In a pocketbook fastening device of the class described, in combination, apair of hingedly connected frame sections, one of which is provided with an opening, a keeper 0:1 with said opening, a sliding locking pin carried by the first named section and adapted for reception in said'keeper, a spring for moving the pin in a direction to disengage it from the keeper, a pivotally mounted lever carried ,by said first named section, the carrying chain being adapted to be connected-with said lever, and means controlled by said lever for moving said pin in a .di-' rection against the action of said spring.

2. In a pocketbook fastening device of the class described, in combination, a pair of hingedly connected frame sections one section being provided with an opening, a keep er carriedby the remaining section and cotion, a carrying chain connected to-the outerend of the lever, and Ineansinterposed between the lever and an adjacent end of the pin for moving the pin in a direction against the action of the spring whenthe chain is 10 in carrying position.
