Divided and this application filed May This invention relates to car trucks and has special reference to the means'for supporting the springs, the present application being a division of an application filed by me September 28, 1925, Serial No. 59,168.
lVith the usual track construction, track irregularities and resultant rocking of the car body caused unequal deformations of the springs at opposite sides of a group or nest of springs and a corresponding disturbance of the equalization of load on the journals of the truck. The life and strength of the springs are also affected adversely by these disturbances, the frame spring seat being thrown out of parallelism with the bolster spring seat and causing a material increase of pressure along one edge of the spring group so that breakage of springs frequent ly results. The object of the present in vention is to overcome the stated disadvantages, and it is attained in such a structure as is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in certain novel features which Will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a central transverse sect-ion of a car truck side frame with the invention embodied therein,

The side frame 1 has a central opening 3 to receive the end of the bolster at and the springs 5 upon which the bolster rests, while in the bottom (3 of the side frame is a pocket 7 communicating through its top directly with the opening 3. A saddle 23 is provided in the pocket 7 and rests upon ribs 24 on the floor or bottom of the pocket. The spring plank 26 with its side Walls or flanges 26 extends through the opening 3 in the side frame and over the pocket 7, and, immediately over the pocket, the spring plank is formed with an opening 25 through which the saddle 23 rises. The side walls of the opening 3 are offset, as at 27,-to accommodate the side flanges of tlie'spring plank, and the saddle is provided at each end with a lip 28 which overhangs and rests upon the bottom web of the spring plank at the end of the opening 25, thereby anchoring the spring plank to the side frame through the superposed weight. are carried by a spring seat or carrier 29 which is provided on its under side with a rocker 2-50 having a concave lower face bearmg upon the saddle, as shown,-the saddle constituting a fulcrum or pivotal support about which the angularity of movement of the bolster will be freely accommodated. To prevent movementof the spring seat along the saddle. ribs 3i may be formed across the rocker to fit in grooves or notches 32 provided therefor across the top of the saddle. The spring plank is a continuous channel member thereby avoiding concentration of corner stresses, and the spring seat fits between the side flanges of the plank, being itself formed with upstanding side flanges for the sake of strength and stiffness.
As a loaded car sways from side to side over uneven track, there is an unequal distribution of pressure upon the oppositive ends of the spring group when the bolster is tilted under a heavy side bearing load or blow. This inequality is overcome by the equalizing mechanism consisting of the saddle and rocker.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having a longitudinally extending pocket in its lower portion, a spring plank extending through the side frame and havingan opening over the pocket in the frame, a saddle in the pocket rising through the opening in the spring plank and having a lip at its end overhanging the floor of the spring plank, and a spring carrier extending over the opening in the spring plank and provided on its under side with a rocker engaging the saddle.
2. In a car truck, the combination ofa side frame having a longitudinally extending pocket in its lower portion, a spring plank extending through the side frame and having an opening over the pocket in the frame, a saddle in the pocket rising through an opening in the spring plank, and a spring carrier extending over the opening in the spring plank and provided on its under side with a rocker engaging the saddle,
3. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having a longitudinally extending pocket in its lower portion, a spring plank extending through the side frame and having an opening over the pocket in the frame, a saddle in the pocket rising through the opening in the spring plank, and a spring carrier extending over the opening in the spring plank and provided on its under side With a rocker engaging the saddle. the rocker being provided on its under side with cross ribs engaging in grooves across the top of the saddle.
4. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having an opening therethrough and having the side walls of said opening offset outwardly, a channeled spring plank extending through the opening in the side frame With its sides fitting in the offset portions of the Walls of said opening, a saddle mounted in the side frame below the spring plank and rising through the spring plank, a spring seat disposed above the spring plank and having side flanges fitting between the side flanges of the spring plank and be tween the side Walls of the opening through the frame, and a rocker on the under side of the spring seat resting on the saddle.
