This invention relates to drill Sharpeners,
but more particularly to a drill Sharpener in which a pair of posts are secured to the forging piston for supporting the cross head.
The object of the invention is to guide the free ends of the posts and to provide rigidity to said posts. 1 I

The invention consists of the combinations of elements features of construction, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter de-' looking in the direction of the arrows,

Referring to the drawings and more particularly to the preferred modification illustrated in Figuresl, 2, and S, the sharpener indicated generally by A' is provided with a hollow base B having formed integrally therewith a raising cylinder C. At the top of the base B is formed a lateral flange D which in this instance forms a support for an anvil block E. The anvil block E is preferably secured to the flange D by means of bolts F and has formed integrally therewith at its lower portion a clamping cylinder G. Vithin the clamping cylinder G is arranged a reciprocatory clamping piston H which carries a reduced extension forming a poston J extendinginto the raising cylinder G.
Arranged above the anvil block E is a cross head K supported by a pair of posts L which in turn are supported by the piston H and in this instance secured thereto by means of nuts 0. The posts L may be pressfitted or secured in any other suitable manner in the crosshead K. The nuts 0 are preferably of somewhat greater length than valve (not shown) actuated by a lever-R the portion of the posts upon which they are screwed so that they may receive recessed plugs]? which may be forced firmly against.
the ends of the posts and thus serve to hold the nuts 0 securely in position.
The posts L are preferably so spaced with respect to the raising cylinder G that during the reciprocation of the pistonH the nuts 0 will pass freely along the side of said raising cylinder. By means of this arrangement free access may be had to thenuts O at all times, and the posts L or any associated parts may be readily removed from the machine without disturbing the general assembly of the machine.
'The admission of pressure fluid to i the raising cylinder C and the clamping cylinder G is preferably controlled by a controlling means such as that which is described-in U. S. Patent No. 1,501,918 entitled Sharpener for drill steels; granted July 22, 1924. to myself and Mortimer S. Parkhill. Ac? cordingly, a valve chest Q is secured to the side of the anvil block E in which a suitable may be reciprocated for controllingthe admission of pressure fluid to the cylinders and the exhaust of pressure fluid therefrom in the manner described in the aforesaid patent.
In the adjacent faces S and Tof theanvil block E and the cross head K respectively are formed'rocesses or die sockets U'and V to receive 'fori'ning dies such as for instance of the type which are used for forming the bit ends of drill steels. In'thisinstance'the anvil block E and the crosshead K are. provided with suitable extensions. 1V and X having recesses Y and Z which are adapted to cooperate for clamping drill steels or other similar articles.
Usually in sharpeners of this type means are provided for forming the cutting faces or wings on the drill steel. Accordingly a pair of guides 6 (Figures 3 and 5) are secured to the machine to receive slidably a dolly cylinder 0 into which may be arranged the forming dolly (not shown).
In accordance with the present invention a guiding and protecting yoke d preferably having a plurality of downwardly extending legs a is arranged above the cross head K and is preferably secured to the anvil block E outside the periphery of the cross head by means of suitable bolts 7. Formed in the yoke d are a pair of-holes 9 into which in this instance are inserted bushin s h to receive the free ends of the posts wine 1. form guide members L. a slight clearance will exist between the cross head and the yoke as shown in Figures 1 and 2. i
It will be observed from the foregoingdescription that the free ends of the posts L are at all times well guided andthatflexing or bending of the posts is therefore prevented, Bynieans of this invention the res.
In the modification shown in Figures 4 and 5, a yoke is secured. to the anvil block E for guiding and supporting the free ends of the posts L. In this instance only a single leg is isprovided at each end of .the yoke, and the bottom face 0 and the inner face 1) of the legs are preferably ,inachined to cooperate with correspondingly formed notches .or recesses g on the anvil block 'E. The-yokej may be secured to the anvil-block in any suitable. and convenientinaiiner as for instance bolts 1' which extend through lugs 8 carried by'th'e legs lti'andthrough flanges t formed on. the anvil block E and are provided with nuts uwhereby the yoke is clamped securely inp'osition;
