TOOL FOB ADJUSTING `EOIIN'I'S OF 'SPARK' PLUQS.
Application filed October 4, 1924. Serial No. 741,697, 1
The present invention relates to producing a unifor of spark-plugs fori gines.
type the ignition is supplied to the within the cylinders by mixture confined means of spark-plugs between the Vwhich an electric spark is passed.
between'thepoints ofk the spark-plu be otV a certaini'vidth to produce effective ignition.
The object of my inven a tool by which the points ot sp` can be adjusted to 'have a uniform gap between them in a convenient manner and by a single operation of the will be fully understood from the following description when taken The invention in connection with t ings, and the novel out and clear pointed at the close of this specification. In said drawings: Fig. 1 shows a spark-plug point tool embodying my inveii the tool being open;
Fig. 2 is the same as F oi the tool closed Fig. 8 is a side view ot' Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 an en jaws also taken on Fig. 2;
F ig. 5 shows the opposite side Figs. 1 and 2, the con'- from that shown struction being slightly -modiiedg Fig. 6 is a section of the arrow on the lin Fig. 7 shows t Referring now taken in the a. tool for explosive points of This gap gs should the .most
tion is to provide ark-plugs width of tool.
he accompanying drawfeatures thereot will be ly defined in the claims adjusting tion, the jawsv of ig. 1, with the aws taken 'from the left d view of the t the tool direction e 6 of Fig. 5; and
he tool as applied to the points of a spark-plug.
Figs. 1 and 2, the tool 11 and 12 pivoted at 13 and provided at one end with cooperating jaws 14 an at the other end. and so far descr struction ot a pair of p understood that my invention may plied to any device which can be move As shown in Figs. 1
d 15 and arms 16 an-d17 The construction shown ibed is having coopera cured to the jaw member 14, so
integral therewith (see part and to extend beyond the the ordinary conliers, but it will be be apting jaws d toward one another.
to 4, a plate 18isseas to be icularly Fig. 4) tace 21 of said jaw member 14. vA spacer' or second plate 19 is fixed to therewith so as to pro 15 and in a posi the plate 18 at right angles ject between the Yjaw tion such fastened to the jaw 14,v
whichare introduced on opposite sides of the said spacer.
g Vhen" the plate18 is thus permanently a space 2O is left between the spacer' 19 and thei'ace 21 of :the
rjaw 14, rthe space 20 being vslightly greater than the size ot stock ot'wliich the points 28 and 24 ot' the spark plugY 25 are made, thus permitting either of said points to be inserted easily. :1.` In the modi tied construction shown in li'igs. 5 vand. 6 the plate 18, instead of being attached to one ot the jaw members 14 or 15, as in Fig. y1 to 4, is secured to the pivot 13, in any suitable manner as by a screw 26, the said plate being free to swing about the pivot 13 except as restrained by the limits ot the movement of the spacer or second plate 19 between the cooperating faces 21 and 22 of the jaws 14 andk15. In this construction, scribed, the spacer 19 extends beyond the end oi' the plate 18. This projection assists theV introduction of the parts of the spark plug on opposite sides of the said spacer 19, irrespective of the position whichthe plate 18 and the spacer 19 may have assumed with respect to the jaws 14 and 15 when the latter are opened.
` The too-l above described is of very great.
value, especially to automobile manufactur-k ers-and repair nien `to whom spark plugs are it'reoniently shipped in bulk rather thanV in individual cartons which would protect the points. Although the ypoints of the spark plugs may have been adjusted originally, it is. therefore, necessary that they be again adjusted before being put in use. My invention provides a convenientand accurate toolr for producing this necessary as well as in that previously dei 23 and 24 of the Y adjustment i ie quickly thereby saving considerable time and labor..
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
l. A tool for adjusting the points of spark plugs, comprising a pair of movable jaws and an externally supported spacer member consisting ol angular-ly disposed plaies, one
of which plates extends between said jawsand is adapted to receive the points of a 'spark plug on opposite sides thereof to provide a predetermined gap between said points when said jaws are moved toward one another.
2. A tool for adjusting the points of spark plugs, comprising a pair of pivoed jaws, arms for moving said toward one another, and aspaeer member comprising angularly disposed plates, one ot' which is positioned between said aws and supported eX- ternally thereof, and adapted to receive the points of a spark plugl on opposite sides thereof to provide a predeermined gap between said points when said jaws are moved toward one another.
3. Pliers for adjusting the points of spark plugs, comprising two members pivoted t- .gether to provide cooperating jaws on one plugs, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws,
arms for moving said jaws toward one another, a plate on one side of the jaws, and a spacer member on said plate and extending between the jaws to permit'the4 points of a spark plug to be positioned on'opposite sides thereof to provide a gap of predetermined amount between said points when said jaws are pressed together.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
