HOISTING MECHANISM.

The object of my'invention is to provide an improved hoisting mechanism of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide in a hoisting mechanism, including a rotary cable drum, a single lever for controlling said drum to throw it into operation with the driving mechanism for winding it to release it to permit the' cable to unwind, and provided with means whereby the drum will be automatically locked against rotation upon releasing said lever.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed outin my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:y i v Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hoisting mechanism.

My improved device comprises a base 10 formed of a pair of parallel beams 11. Mounted on the beams 11 are transversely taken on the arranged beams 12 designed to carry the beams 13 which extend above and parallel with the beams 11 and which are designed tov support my improved mechanism. Mounted on top of two of the beams 11 and transversely therewith is ka driving shaft 14 carrying a belt pulley 15, the inner Vend of the shaft being provided with ya pinion 16 designed to mesh withy a spur gear 17 mounted Von the inner end ofa driven shaft 18. The shaft 18 is mounted between suitable bearings 19 and designed to carrythe cable drum 20 rotatively mounted on said shaft.
One end of the drum 2O is provided with a brake drum 21, while the other end is provided with what I shall term a `driving drum 22.. The drum 21 is provided with a brake band 23, one end of whichisrigidly connected to a pin 24, while theother end is connected to a draw bar 25.1 The free end of the draw bar 25 is pivotally connected to an arm 26 rigidly securedto arockv shaft 27. Adjacent to the driving drum v22 is a driving arm 28 rigidly secured to the shaft 18, one end of which is provided with an inwardly extendingpin 29 designed to carry one end of a driving band 30 which extends around the said drinn 22, `.and has its opposite end pivotally connected vto a lever 31. The said lever 31 is pivotally connected to the arm 28 by means of the bolt 32. The said arm 31 extends with its inner end substantially adjacent to the shaft 18 when the band 30 is in a released position. The outer end of the shaft 18 islprvided with a sliding cone 33 having an annular groove 34 designed to receive pins 35 ofthe operating lever 36. One end of the lever 36 is pivoted at 37 to abrackety 38. Y The other end` of the lever 36 is pivotally connected to a bell crank lever 39, said lever being pivoted to a bracket 40. The bell crank lever 39 is actuated by means of a link 41 pivotally connected to a downwardly extended arm 42 secured totheshaft 27. The inner end ofthe shaft27 is'vproyvided with an upwardly and rearwardly extended arm 43, the upper end of which is f f' connected to one end of a vcontractile coil spring 44, lThe other end of the spring 44 is secured to a bracket 45 mounted on the ytop edge of one of the beams 11. The arm 43 is pivotally connected to a link 46, the
free end of which is adjustably connected with a hand lever 47 mounted on a rock shaft 48, which is in turn pivotally' mounted in the beams 11. lIhe rock shaft 48 is pro vided vwith a foot lever49havngits free I end provided with a treadle 50. l
The drum 20, is provided with a cable 51 which may be led to any desired position, it bein illustrated as extended over a pulley 52 having at vits lower end a Weight 53.
Theupractical operation of my device is as follows v Y Assuming that power is applied tothe pulley'l through the belt 54, and the shaft 14 is being rotated, causing the shaftv18 to the arm 42 will be moved forwardly, which will cause the rear end of the lever 36 to be moved outwardly from the drum, causing the cone 83 to be slid outwardly and out of engagement with the lever 3l, which will cause the band 30 to lie loosely over the driving drum 22. The weight 58 will then be suspended by the band 23.
If it is desired to lower the weight 53, the operator grasps theupper end of the handle 47, or places his foot on the treadle 50, and moves the upper end of said handle forwardly slightly releasing the band 23, which will permit the weight 53 to descend the desired distance, at which time the han.- dle 47 may be released and the weight again retained in a new position.
If it is desired to elevate the weight 53, the upper Yend iof `the handle 47 is moved forwardly to a great-er extent, slightly 're leasing the band 23 and at the'` same time moving the lever 36 inwardly, the cone 33 into engagement with the lever V31 and the band into engagement with the driim22. The arm 28 and the lever 3l beingrotated continuously bythe shaft 18 will cause the drum 20 to be rotated and the weight '53 elevated.
rlhe parts are so adjusted that as the band 23 isbeing disengaged, the'. band 30 will be brought into engagement with the drum 22. It will be seen that when the lever 47 is moved .to a certain position forwardly, both of the bands will b-e partially released from their respective drums, which will permit the weight 53 to lower, but if the lever 47 is moved quickly past this point, the band 30 will enga-ge itsrespective drumv before any appreciable lowering of the weight 53 takes place. y
The cone 33 is moved into engagement with the lever 3l to cause the said ylever to be swung about the pivot 32,V and the band 30 to be drawn taut on the drum 22, causing the drum 2O to be rotated and the weight elevated. The arm 26 is formed considerably longer than the arm 42, so that the brake band 2l may be quickly applied, while the brake band 22 will be more 4gradually applied so that the said brake band vmay serve the purpose 'of a clutch, permitting a certain amount of slippage between the member 20 and the drum 22, while the weight is beingl started to elevate.
Thus it will be seen l have provided a hoisting mechanism of comparatively simple construction, which is very sensitive in its operation, and which may he controlled by a single lever, so that by releasing the lever,.the weight will be automatically suspended, which provides means whereby, if several levers are to be operated by a. single operator, such as often happens in excavating machines for which this device is particularly adapted, the operator will not drop the weight on account of becoming confused, which sometimes happens when new operators are being trained.
I claim as my invention:

In combination, a supporting frame, a drumshaft, a cable drum rotatively mounted on said shaft, said drum having at one end awbralre drum and at its opposite end a driving drum. a driving arm secured to said drum shaft, a lever pivoted to said arm, an external clutch band for said driving drum having one'en'd connected to said driving arm and its other end connectedtoone end of said pivoted lever, the free end of said lever extending inwardly adjacent to said driving shaft, a conical sleeve slidably mounted'on said shaft and designed to engage said pivoted arm to tighten said brake band, an external brake band for said brake drum, a roclr shaft, a, control lever,l means forl imparting movement from said control lever to said rock shaft, means for operatively connecting lsaid ro'clr shaft with said conical sleeve, means for operatively connecting said rock shaft with the brake band of said brake drum, the parts being so 'arranged that when the rock shaft is in one position of its move'- ment the brake band will be drawn taut and theconical sleeve released, and when in another position of its movement the brake band of said brake drum will be released and the conical sleeve moved into Contact with said pivoted arm forloclingA said driving drum and said driving shaft in unison,
and a spring for applying yieldable pres# sure tosaid brake band.
