The objectwof the present invention is to provide a very simple, inex, ensive and ositively-actjng device for ceaning win ows through raising and lowering the window towlnch .the deviceis ap lied. The device being apfplicable to bbth the inside and out,
side sur aces of the window and comprises a wiper of novel fprm and construction. By means of the invention the surfaces of wlndows may be rapidly cleaned, without requiring the operators to lean out of the windows, sit pm the window sills ,or otherwise endanger 1i e.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a window and window frame with an embodiment of the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentar horizontal section of the window and win ow frame showing the said embodiment in position;
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the device on the line 3-3, Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, the parts shown being turned over in plan, however, for better illustration of the construction;
Figure 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the left hand end of the device, and
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the manner of securing the telescopic rods to the adjustable carrying arm.
Thedevice comprises a flat faced wiper plate A, surfaced with a relatively flat sheet of felt or the like 1, which is preferably treated with chemicals which have a slight solvent action upon de osits upon the glass. The characteristic of t e wiper is that it is adapted to operate in any or substantially any conditions and comprises a rigid member having a relatively broad, flat surface which is covered with a flat surfaced somewhat yielding material, the surface contacting with the window being very much greater in area than the thickness of the material.
The wiper head is carried by telescopic rods, the exterior rod 2 being rigidly secured to a right hand carrier arm 3, and the inner rod 4 being rigidly connected to a left hand carrier arm 5, the arms being alike in construction. In the present embodiment of the invention, the rods 2 and 4 are rectangular in construction, the inner rod being hollow as well as the outer rod. A convenient means for securing each rod to its carrier arm is illustrated in Figure 5. In that figure the end of the rod is longitudinally cut at its corners and the sections a, b", and 0 are projected through a square opening in the carrier arm, ,then bent down upon the face, of the arm, and are secured in POSitlOII upon the threaded ends by the headed studs 6 and nuts 7. The wiper head ismounted upon the telesco .)ic rods by means of the straps 8. Any other suitable connecting means may be employed.
Each carrier arm 3, 5, is adjust-ably mounted on a bracket and the latter is adapted to be secured upon the frame of a window. To this end each carrier arm is provided with a longitudinal slot 9, through which projects a threaded stud 10 carried by the bracket 11, a thumb nut 12 being employed on the stud in conjunction with a. washer 13 to clamp the arm on the bracket. In order to guide the arm in its movements relatively to the bracket and also assist in retaining the two members associated, a pair of guide lugs 14 may be employed to contact with the carrier arm, these lugs being suitably secured to the bracket 11. The bracket 11 is bent angularly having two parallel portions 11*, 11, and an intermediate transversely extending portion. The portion 11 has a downward extension 6 which is adapted to be received in the eye or eyes 15 of a plate 15 secured to the window frame as shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 4.
In applying the device to a window, the thumb screws 12 will be loosened and the carrier arms moved backwardly. The brackets 11 will then be secured in position, their extensions 0 passing into the eyes of carrying plates 15 on the window frame. The wiper may then be moved forwardly into contact with the windowpane B as indicated in Figure 2 and secured in position by tightening the thumb screws 12. If the wiper is not in proper position laterally of the window frame, it is moved to the proper position, the straps sliding on the telescopic rods. The effective minimum length of the telescopic rods will ordinarily be that of the minimulnwidth of a Window, and a maximum effective length by extension will enable the device to be applied to windows of various widths substantially greater than the mmimum.
In operation of the device, the window is raised and lowered and the wiper, by reason of its substantially broad, fiat, firmly held yielding surface, which as before stated iii may be chemically treated, acts to thoroughly clean the glass surface of the window Without the use of liquid and whether the device-be applied exteriorly or interiorly of the window.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a window glass cleaning device comprising a plate having a relativelybroad flat surface, a body of felt having a surface of the same general form as the plate and connected thereto, telescopic rods affording a support forthe plate, the plate being mounted for movement along said rods, a carrier arm secured at the exposed end of each telescopic rod and brackets one for each carrier arm, each aim being adjustable on its bracket and the brackets being adapted for securing to a Window frame.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a window glass cleaning device comprising a plate having a relatively broad flat surface and a body of felt having a surface of the same general form attached thereto, telescopic rods, angular in cross section, supporting the plate, the plate being mounted for movement along the rods but being held against movement in other directions by the angularity of the rods and corresponding connections, carrier arms for each telescopic rod and secured to the outer end of the latter, and brackets one for each carrier arm, each arm being adjustable on its bracket and the bracket being adapted for securing to a window frame. 7
