UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
AUSTIN V. M. SPRAGUE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ICE PICKS, CHISELS, AND HAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,864, dated May 4, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUSTIN V. M. SPRAGUE, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in In-' struments for Picking, Cutting, Crushing and Pulverizin g Ice; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the head, looking on the opposite side from Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the head.
This invention relates to a combined instru- 111(11'5 for picking, cutting, crushing, and pulverizing ice; and consists of a head with the pick and cutter cast therein, and provided with projecting teeth and a concave socket on its-sides, for a purpose that will presently be described.
A represents the cast-iron head, which is attached to the handle B. In the act of casting, the pick 0 and cutter D are placed in the mold, so that when the metal is poured said parts are cast in. They project out from the opposite edges of the head horizontally, and are used, one for picking and the other for cutting and splitting the ice, serving the purpose of the separate instruments which are now used to do the same work.
One of the faces or sides of the cast-iron.
head, at right angles to the pick and cutter, is provided with laterally-projecting teeth a a a, while the other is provided with a concave socket, b, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The exterior teeth a 0b are preferably arranged in a circle, while the central one a is conical and projects out some distance beyond the others. This face having the teeth is used for crumbling or'breaking ice into small pieces, the center proiecting tooth serving to center or hold the head to the ice in making the blow, by striking in advance of the others, thereby preventing slipping or glancing off, while the other teeth do the crushing. The other face, having the concave, is intended for mashing or finely pulverizing the ice, which is done by striking a smart blow, the concavity having a tendency to concentrate and hold the material, while the concussion pulverizes it very finely.
The instrument above described serves the purpose of four ordinary instruments, and the whole is combined in a compact and convenient form. The head A serves as the attachment for the pick and cutter, and its sides or faces as mashers for breaking up and pulverizing the ice. The four sides of the head are thus utilized.
The device is specially useful in houses, restaurants, saloons, hotels, &c., where, in addition to picking and cutting the ice, it is desirable to break it into small pieces, or pulverizin g it into a powder for mixing in drinks, freezing creams, water-ices, and other purposes. For this purpose the sides of the instrument are specially constructed, and constitute an essential feature of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The instrument herein described, as a new article of manufacture, consisting of the head A, attached to the handle B, having the pick 0 and cutter D cast therein, and constructed with the teeth a a and concavity b on the two opposite faces, as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
A. V. M. SPRAGUE. Witnesses e S. J. BUDLONG, HENRY BAKER.
