Description

. 1,628,563 May 10. 1927. J. TAYLOR BATTERY PLATE FULLER Filed July 20, 1925 ATTCRNEY Patented May 10, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BATTERY-PLATE FULLER.
Application filed July 20, 1925.
This invention relates to a battery plate puller and has for its primary object the construction of a plate puller that will more effectively engage the battery plates in a 5 manner to facilitate the pulling ofthe plates from the battery casing.
An object of the invention is the novel substantial manner in which the parts are so connected that when the handle is subjected to a pulling operation the jaw elements will be rigidly forced into engagement with the plates.
A feature of my invention is the adjustability of the sets of jaws towards and away from each other to compensate for different size plates.
With these and'other objects in view, the invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved plate puller in applied, position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view 5 through the puller adjacent the jaw elements.
Fig. 4 a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Again referring to the drawings illustrating one of the many constructions of my invention, the numerals 1 and 2 designate a double set of jaws each set having jaw elements 3 rigidly secured to the short arm 4 of a pair of pivoted levers 5. The long arms (i of the levers are pivotally connected to the handle 7 by the links 8. It will be noted that the handle 7 which is of insulating material has arranged in each end pins 8 and 9 upon which are mounted the links. It will also be noted that the pin 9 is of in reased length so that the links mounted thereon. liesides having pivotal movement. may have longitrulinal movement towards and away from the handle so that the distance between the of links may be increased or decreased for compensating for the variation in the distance between the posts 10 of the Serial No. 44,936.
battery plates. Each jaw element 3 is provided with teeth 11 for increasing the elfective engagement of the elements with the posts 11.
From the foregoing deccri 'ition taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that the post of the battery plate may be quickly and effectively gripped and in jn'oportion to the resistance of the plates in being removed, the ellertive grip between the jaw elements and the post proportionally increased owing to the combination of the lovers and the links. The insulating handle 7 prevents short circuiting between the sets of jaws while at the same time providing an effective grip for the puller.
It is, of course, to he understood that the jaw elements and various other parts may be connected in other relations than illustrated and therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a battery plate puller comprising a handle of insulating material, two sets of pivoted jaw members. links for each set of jaw numbers. a pin for pivotally connecting one set of links to one end of said handle and a ond pin mounted in the other end of the handle pivotally supporting the other set of links for relative movements and for longi tudinal moveu'ients along. the shank of the pin.
2. A battery plate puller ii-omj'irising a handle, two sets of grip fiing jaws. means for pivotally connecting one set 0t said gr 'ipine' jaws to one end of said himdle. a relatively long pin extending from the o 'ipositc end of said handle and the other set of gripping jaws being pivotally and slidably umunted upon said pin.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
