1,628,147 a. c. HOUCK PAD FOR IRONING AND PRES$ING MACHINES Filed Feb. 14, 1923 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented May 10, 1927. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, GEORGE C. HOUCK, F SYRACUSE. NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS. TO THE PROSPERITY COMPANY, INC, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
This invention relates to pads for ironing and pressing machines, mangles etc., and has for its object a particularly simple and .cflicient means for attaching the outer covering I of cloth to the under side of the pad, which means does not project beyond the plane of the lower side of the pad, so that the pad can rest on a flat bed without forming de pressions in the bed.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set In describing this invention, referenceis had to the accompanying drawings, 1n which like characters designate correspondlng parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pad applied to the lower buck or bed of a pressing machine.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view, partly broken away, of the pad.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
This pad comprises a means on the bottom side thereof to which the margin of the cloth covers can be readily attached. and dctached, such means being arranged approximately in the plane of the bottom side of the pad, so that the pad will rest flatwise and evenly on the face of the bed or buck or other support.
The body of the pad here illustrated comprises a plurality of springs secured to the base 2, and a layer 3 of felt or padding overlying the springs. 'A covering 4 of cloth overlies the felt padding.
The base 2 is here shown as a sheet metal plate, the springs being secured at their lower ends to the plate by rivets 5. base rests on the heads 6 of these rivets except where the heads are covered by gin of the covering cloth 4.
The means by which the covering at may be attached, to, and detached from, the base plate, comprises a plurality of prongs 7 arranged around the margin of the plate and with their points directed inwardly toward the center or the median line of'thc plate, these prongs extending in-a'dire'ct-ion parallel to the plane of the outer face of the plate and being located in, or-near such plane of the outer face of the plate.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the pad is shown as mounted on PAD FOR IRONING AND PRESSING MACHINES.
Application filed February 14, 1923. Serial No. 618,999.

plate 2 and caught on intervals. The prongs are preferably struck from the metal from which the depressions the covering along is folded under the the prongs 7 along one margin of the plate 2. Then the covering is stretched over the body of the pad and the opposite margin of covering caught on the adjacent prongs of the base.

suitable manner, and .as
ofthe buck 8.
What I claim is:
The
the marthe base plate, and the caught on,said prongs.
GEORGE c. HOUOK.
Owing to the openings 9 or depression 10, the covering can readily be hooked over the prongs, and owing to the arrangement of the prongs, the pad lies fiatwise on the bed or buck without special provision being made grooves in thebuck The pad may be held on the buck 8 in any here shown, it is secured to the buck 8 by elastic members, as coiled springs 11 extending crosswise of the under side of the pad near its ends, these springs 11 being looped around the ends of the buck. The ends of the springs are secured to lugs 12 depending from the margin pad and lapping the edge faces of the A pad forironing and pressing machines, comprising a base plate, padding mounted on the base plate, having a covering for the padding, the base plate being formed with depressions at its lower face, and prongs extending across the depressions and inwardly toward the center of the plate, the prongs being located substantially in the plane of covering having its margin folded under the base plate and I have hereunto acusc, 1n the county
