UNITED STATES PATENT Orrlcnc THOMAS J. ELLYSON AND AARON O. ASKEW, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 162,808, dated May 4, 1875; application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, THoMAs J. ELLYsoN and AARON O. ASKEW, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented an Improved Reversing and Self-Heating Sad-Iron, of which the following is a specification The invention will first be fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of our improved iron, taken on the line a: xof Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the handle connections and the locking-lever; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2. v
A and B represent the two faces of theiron,
Y between which is the hollow space c, into which the burner extends, from an alcohol vor other lamp, E, attached to the heel ot' the iron for heating it, at the same time that it is being used to avoid the labor and delay of heating it by the stove, and to dispense in warm weather with the hot res necessary for heating them. The pivot F, at the heel of the iron, is made hollow for the burner to enter the chamber in this way, and it is formed on the standard G ofV the handle H. The lamp is attached to the iron by the studs I projecting from the standard Gr and the slotted plate J. It also has a latch, K, which swings over and engages the standard, after the studs are adjusted in the slots, to prevent the lamp from vVents are provided at En.
becoming detached. The pivot L is attached to the iron, and the handle-standard M turns on it. It also has a locking-lever, N, pivoted in the 'slot in its end, so as to be held irmly against swinging with the handles, but so as to swing between the lugs O of the standard and be fastened between them `by the springcatch P, and thus lock the handle in position. It swings on the pivot L, so as to lockr the handle over either face. The sides of the hollow iron are perforated at Q to admit air, and In order to carry the burner of the lamp into the hollow space c, low down, without allowing the burning luid to feed too fast, I have arranged the wicktube s for the wickT to enter it at the top and pass down low enough to enter spacer. The advantages of this reversing and self-heating iron over other irons will be manifest to all.
Having thus described my in vent-ion, 'I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with burner and hollow iron, ot' handle, standard G, having pivot F and studs I, the plate J, and the latch K, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described. l 1
