IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE TOPS.

My invention relates to an improved device for adjusting the canopy of childrens and other carriages, in a simple, quick, and reliable manner, in any required position for shading against the sun, and other purposes.

The invention consists of a curved standard or arm, which is attached to the body of the carriage and provided, at the upper end, with a pivoted pulley, operated by means of a turning spring-knob and connecting-cords. A canopy or parasol, with arc-shaped slidepiece, is adjusted by a clamping device to the pulley, and set to any inclination thereon.

A represents a curved supporting-standard or arm, which is of suitable strength, and applied by fastening-screws to the body of a childs or other carriage. The upper end of the standard extends to a point nearly vertical above the center of the body, and carries a pivoted pulley, B, to the under side of which is attached, by a suitable clamping arrangement, B, the arc-shaped arm C of a canopy,

parasol, or other protecting device, so thatthe same may be readily adjusted on the pulley in horizontal or inclined position, as desired. The pulley is turned to either side, together with the canopy, by means of cords D, which are applied at opposite sides of the circumference of the pulley, and passed through guide-eyes or staples a of the standard to a spring-knob, E, being attached to the pulley and knob in such manner that the unwinding of one cord, on the turning of the knob, produces the winding up of the other cord, and thereby the ready swinging around of the pulley and canopy in any desired position. The knob or handleE turns on apivot or shaft attached at. some convenient height to the standard A, and slides with such play along the same that a notched or recessed disk or ratchet-plate, d, at its lower side, may be disengaged from a stationary tooth or pin, 61, of standard A, allowing the turning. of the knob to either side. A spiral spring, e, at the end of the knob, carries the same back as soon as released, andsecures thereby the position of the knob, pulley, and canopy. A stop-pin, f, projects from the under side of the knob, and defines, by its contact with standard A, the extent of turning the knob in either direction, so that the cords remain always stretched, and do not come off the knob.

The adjusting device forms a neat and convenient attachment to childs and other carriages, as the canopy may be set to any inclination and direction, and produces thereby a complete and etficieut shade against the sun.

Having thus described myinven tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The canopy-adjusting device, composed of curved supporting standard with rotating end pulley, having adjustable canopy to be operated by spring-knob and connecting-cords, all combined substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a rotating pulley, B, having clamping .device B, with arc-shaped slide-piece C, attached to canopy for setting the same under any inclination to the carriage-body, as specified.

3. The pivoted spring knob E, having ratchet base-plate d, and stop-pin f, combined with standard A and pin 61, for defining eX- tent of turning motion of knob and securing its position when set, substantially as specified.
