This invention relates to loose leaf binders, and one of the objects of the invention is thel provision of new and improved loose leaf retaining mechanism that is easily manipulated,.and to which the leaves or papers may be readily applied.
Another object of the "invention is the provision of a new and improved flexible loose leaf retaining member that is comparatively rigid when in operative position within the book case or cover, and which vmay be readily removed -therefrom or. at-
tached thereto.
A. further-'object of the inventionis the provision of new and improved'loose leaf retaining means that will permit the leaves to lie flat on the covers when the book is in open position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a loose.leaf binder, that is simple but rugged in construction, cheap to manufacture, easily assembled, efficient in operation and that is not likely to become broken, distorted .or get out of order.

The loose leaf retaining members 16 are adapted to be 'detachably secured to the return bends or flanges 17. The retaining members or paper holding clips 16 may be of an suitable flexible material. Preferably t ey comprise a body portion 21 formed of resilient material. In the form of the device selected to illustrate one embodiment of the invention thebody portion 21 of the retainermember or cli 16 is in the form of a helical spring. lugs 22 having reduced. portions or necks 23 forming the heads 24 are secured to the ends of-the spring as by insertin the. ends 25 of the plugs in the ends of t e spring. The ends 25 are provided with projections or corrugations for enga ing the coils of the sprmg for retaining t e plugstherein.
In applyingthe retaining members or clips to the'stifener member or back plate 15 one'of the necks 23 is placed within one of the notches 18, after which the bod portion 21 is curved and the neck 23 att e o posite end is inserted in an opposed notc of the cli or'retainer memient to ho d the clip in posit-ion.

It is thought from the foregoing taken in connection With the accompanying drawings that the construction and operation of my device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and that various changes in size, shape, proportion and details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims. l
I claim as my invention:
l. In a loose leaf binder, a plate having its longitudinal edges return-bent and provided With notches, a resilient flexible paperretaining member, and means on each end of Said retaining member for detachably engaging said notches for holding said last named memberin paper-holding position on said plate, said retaining-member assuming the form of a straight element when released.
2. In combination, a rigid back member or plate having its longitudinal edges return-bent and provided with opposed V- shaped nothes therein, a loose leaf retaining member comprising a close coil spring member normally straight having a head and a reduced portion at each end for engaging said notches for securing said leaves to said plate.
3. In a loose leaf binder, a binder plate having a longitudinal edge return-bent and rovided With notches, a plurality of loose leaf retaining members, each of said members comprising a closely Wound spiral spring member, means for attaching one end of each spring member to an edge portion of said plate, and heads secured to the opposite ends of said springlmembers and provided With reduced portions for engaging said notches for holding said retainer members in position for'ret-aining loose leaves thereon.
4. In combination, a pair of side members, a back member comprising an outer and an inner flexible element secured'to said side members, a stiff back member between said elements, said back member having returnbent flanges provided With notches therein, a resilient loose leaf retaining member comprising a length of coil spring and means for detachably connecting the ends of said member to the notches in said flanges, said means being held .in engagement with said plate by the resiliency of said member.
