IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-SUPPORTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,726, dated April 27, 1875; application filed January 25, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD J. WELLEs, of St. Joseph, Buchanan county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Umbrella- Holders, of which the following is a specification:

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is an elevation of the adjustable holder, showing thejoint. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the clamp and tightening-nut. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2, taken on the line '00 00 showing the serrated section of the joint, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the back side of one part of the clamp, showinga crosssection of the square portion of the tightening-screw, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line y 3 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Arepresents the stand made of iron, or other material, which is attached to the seat (it may be attached to a fixture near the seat) by means of the screw and nut B, which screw passes through the seat, the nut being on the under side. The stand may be curved in any manner to adapt it to the use intended. At the upper endof the stand is a socket, O, which receives a head, D. E' is a shoulder on the socket. Above the shoulder the outer surface of the socket is serrated, and the head D has an annular groove, F, which fits onto the serrated portion of the socket, as seen in Fig. 5. The head is made in two parts, the part G of which is serrated, and is made to engage with the socket by screwing up the nut H of the tightening-screw I. J and K form the clamp Y which clasps and holds the handle of the umbrella. The outer clamping-jaw K is rigidly attached to the end of the screw I by means of a projection on one side. The jaw J slides on a square portion, L, of the screw I, and its inner side is concave, and serrated to fit the convex and serrated end M of the head D. The

tightening-screw I passes horizontally through the head, and on its outer end is the clampingnut H. 0 represents the staff of the umbrella, which is clamped and firmly held between the jaws J K. It will be seen that by lowering the tighteningnut the head D will be loosened, and may be turned in any direction, and that the staffof the umbrella will be released. The clamp formed by the jaws J K is held by the conical serrati'on M, and the square portion of the screw is prevented from turning thereby. The adjustment of the umbrella is governed by the nut H.

By this invention any buggy or open vehicle may be provided with a shelter for screening the occupants of the seat at slight expense, and one which can be entirely removed at pleasure.
