EYE PROTECTOR.

l/Vorkmen engaged in avocations such as coal mining, glass working, metal founding and the like, resulting in: filling the air with small particles frequently suffer injury and experience annoyance and inconvenience by such particles lodging in or striking the eyes. Hence the present invention arms to provide an article for protecting the eyes, which is always conveniently at hand to be adjusted into operative position when required, and shiftable into inoperatlveposltion to be out of the way when not requlred for protection.

In accordance with the invention, the protector is connected to a miners cap or other form of head covering, by elastic means, such as webbing, in a manner to hold the protector against the face in front of the eyes, or against the cap was to be out of the way when not required for service.

While the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be un-, derstood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements, the design may be varied, and such other changes 1n the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof. V

The numeral 1 designates a miners cap which is illustrated to demonstrate the application of the invention. The protector is connected to the cap, or otherformof head covering, by means of elastics 2, which may consist of webbing or other suitable means. 7

the face, without causing discomfort, while, at the same time, providing ample room for vision and ventilation. V

In the preferable construction, the protector comprises similar sections or members which are detachably connected, each of the members being connected to the cap by means of an elastic 2. The sections or members are adapted to overlap at their inner or meeting ends and are connected by means Y of separable fastenings of the stud and socket type. -Each of the members or sections of the protector is elongated and outwardly bulged, as indicated most clearly in Figures 3 and 4, the marginal portion being of such shape as to obtain a close fit against the face so as to exclude foreign matter from the eyes. The body portion 3 of the protector preferably consists of wire gauze, pressed into concavo-convex shape, and having its edge reinforced by means of a binding 4 of leather, or other suitable material. The middle portion of the protector corresponding to the overlappingends is constricted so as to obtaina snug and neat fit across the nose, as indicated most clearly in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The cap is provided with one element 5 of the separable fastening and each of the members of the protector is provided with the companion element 6 of the fastener. When the protector is' not required for actual service, the members or sections are. disconnected and each of the members is connected to the cap by engaging the element 6 with the element 5, substantially as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1. It will thus be understood that the protector is in position for instant use when required. The members may be quickly disconnected from the crown of the cap and connected by engaging the elements 5 dicated in Figures 1 and 2, it is retained in place bymeans of the elastic connections 2 as Will-be readily appreciated.

Having thus described the invention, We claim:

1. The combination with a cap, of an eye protector comprising separable sections, an elastic connecting the outer end of each sec tion with a side 01 the cap and conip'leinental fastening elements, on the crown of the cap and at the inner ends'o'f the said sections for securing the latter to the cap when detached 0r connectingthe sections when the device is placed against the face to protect the eyes.
