An object of my invention is to provide a container for use with electric light bulbs and the like, that will support and protect such bulbs without the employment of additional protect-ive material of the corrugated sort and the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device for the purposes stated where in the cartons themselves may be so employed as to attain certain shock resisting qualities for minimizing shock transmitted to the lamps, from impact directed upon the crates or the like containing the cartons and lamps.
Another .object of my invention is to pro vide a carton' of the type referred to that may be readily printed and that may be economically packed for shipment and storage.
Another-advantage of my invention is to provide a carton wherein the lamps are precluded from slipping out of the carton when the ends of the carton are open thereby reducing the likelihood of accidental breakage.
These and other objects are attained y the -means described herein `and disclosed the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through two cartons lembodying my invention showing Ithe manner in which the cartons are nested and the manner in which lampsare positioned and retained in the cartons.
The carton 3 is preferably of a square cross section and of a rectan ular longitudinal section. Adjacent one o? its ends 4, the carton has formed in it sides 5 and 6, as shown in Fig. 1, and sides 7 and 8 as disclosed in Fig. 2, intersecting slits 9 and 10. Flaps 11 are bent outwardly from the sides of the carton upon lines 12 extending between the extremities of the slits 9 and 10 whereby each of t-he aps is of a substantially triangular form, all of the flaps having their free apexes converging upon sub stantially the same point. Each of the sides of the carton has formed in it adjacent the aperture 14. The apertures 14 are so positioned that when ad'acent cartons are disposed as shown in ig. 2 whereby to dispose the flaps of a given carton adjacent the perforated ends of the next adjacent cartons, the flaps will enter the perforations 14 of such adjacent cartons. This relationship is established so that the lamps 17 may be inserted in the square cartons, without tearing the cartons at the corners thereof, and for utilizing the contact of the bowl 1G upon the inner surface of the liaps 1l for projecting the flaps outwardly when the carton again assumes its square form. The slits 9 and 10 permit the resumption of the square form by the carton. One of the sides of the carton, may carry suitable end laps 18 whereby to close the end of the carton. Other sides, at the perforated ends of the carton may carry suitable inter-locking side flaps 19 and 20 between which an opening 21 may be provided for the reception of the screw cap 22 of the lamp 17. By making the end flaps 19 and 2O sufficiently long that when these flaps assume their interlocked position the end flaps will extend inwardly of the end 18 as shown in Fig. 2 the end laps are utilized for axially s acing the screw cap 22 within the carton. he tip 23 of the lamps may rest upon the end flaps 24 and 25 formed at the c posite ends of the carton, or may be spaced from such end flaps 24 and 25 as desired.

Vhat I claim is:
1. A carton of the class ing4 slitted sides, the sides having ridges formed adjacent the slits for engagement upon an article contained in the carton for projecting the sides adjacent the slits outdescribed comprispositioning the neck of the @projecting the portions wardly, lugs struck inwardly from the sides for positioning an article 1n the container and whereby apertures are formed in the sides for the reception of bulged portions of adjacent cartons.

In a package, the combination of a container having normal major and minor diameters lying in the same plane, the container comprising exterior walls, having intersecting slits therein, whereby to form openings in the package, an article in the container, said article having a .diameter intermediate the major and minor diameters of the container, and having its indicated diameter disposed at the slits in the container walls, the article thereby outwardly projecting the portions of the .container intermediate the slits for 'providing protective means for the package, and the entry of the article finto the' said openings in the container permitting the container to assume its l normalfcondition'.
